“Stunning Stresa”
Reviewed April 9, 2014

On the shore of Lake Maggiore in northern Italy, Stresa is a place to relax and enjoy the best of what nature has to offer. Its courtyard shops and tranquil waterfront invite leisurely strolls. But there’s even more to enjoy offshore – a passenger ferry opens the door to unique and breathtaking sites. We started our day trip by taking the Navigazione Lago Maggiore ferry across the lake to the 40-acre Villa Taranto Botanical Gardens. My only disappointment here was not budgeting enough time to truly appreciate the meticulously designed landscape featuring more than 80,000 blooming plants. On the way back to Stresa, we hopped off the ferry at one of the three Borromeo islands for lunch, Isola Pescatori, which is ringed with shoreside dining options. We walked off our sumptuous meal on Isola Bella, with its majestic terraced gardens and Baroque palace. To see some of my pictures from this region – including the white peacocks at Isola Bella – visit my website at: http://savvysightseer.wix.com/savvy#!lake-maggiore/c20nd. Stresa is truly a treat!

My family and I have just returned to Australia having just completed the GetBiking Tours ITALY & SWITZERLAND FAMILY TOURS.

The tour was absolutely fantastic, ticking so many boxes. Iconic scenery, great food, wine, challenging rides and making new friends with a bit of adventure thrown in made for the perfect combination for us. It was also great value for money. Without a doubt, our best ever holiday.

All the superlatives tour organiser and leader Scott Penny use to describe Lauterbrunnen, Lake Maggiore, Stresa, Lucca and Rome in the tour description where absolutely spot on. Have a read about it at this address: http://www.getbiking.net/trips/ITY-FAM

Scott was generous to a fault in every respect. He worked hard to ensure the varied expectations of the group were met at all times and changed the schedule at times to accommodate requests.

Without the expert and very helpful advice from Scott the tour would have been half the experience. I would happily recommend the tour to any cyclist who wants to sample the delights of riding in Europe and take his/her family along to share a very special time.

“Beautiful scenery - go and embrace the italian charm”
Reviewed September 29, 2013 via mobile

WHERE DO I START??? The people, the food, the scenery, the tranquility, the variety, the culture, the weather? All brilliant!!! If you like all of the above then go and visit lake maggiore, my favourite part was having lunch and/or dinner near the lake over looking the panorama whilst enjoying my spaghetti with lobster and sipping on a delicate white wine. Go and give a try!!!
(By the way there's loads to do and see)

“Beautiful, Enchanting”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Here is a short overview of Stresa and the surrounding area.
For London flights use Malpensa airport and the Alibus transport. Trains run via Milan and take a long while, taxis are very expensive if travelling solo or in a couple.
Stresa is wonderfully positioned on the lake. It has an obvious tourist trade but doesn't feel 'touristy'. I would strongly recommend it as a town to stay in.
I imagine there are hotels situated away from the water but I would strongly recommend staying in one adjacent to the lake.
The narrow streets of Stresa are interesting. It is an attractive small town with modest buildings. There are many small shops (some touristy) as well as a chain supermarket. Most restaurants and bars are clustered around the two of three main (though small) squares.
Around Stresa:- it is almost impossible to descibe the enchantment of Isola Bella. No trip to the lake would be complete without a trip to this garden and palace. The E16 entrance fee makes it an expensive trip (the ferry is an additional cost) but you could spend a full day on the island and be happy. There is a combined ticket for Bella and Isola Madre at E18 but that may be too much to cope with in one day (unless you want to whizz through both places). I combined Isola Bella with Isola Pescatore (sometimes called Superiore) which is a small cluster of streets on a small island - you'll need no more than an hour on Pescatore.
The water-front of Stresa is a joy in itself - give in to the urge to watch the white spray of boats flicking across the lake, the sails disappearing in the distance and the call of an Aperol spritz.
The Monterrone cable car passes the time for an hour or two.
Ferries travel all around the lake. The longest is a round trip to Locarno which takes 6 hours.
Visit the tourist information (situated in the ferry terminal) to pick up ideas and see what's on.
If you take a single item with you ensure it's gnat spray. They only seem to come out on occasion but when they do wow are they hungry.
