On the shore of Lake Maggiore in northern Italy, Stresa is a place to relax and enjoy the best of what nature has to offer. Its courtyard shops and tranquil waterfront invite leisurely strolls. But there’s even more to enjoy offshore – a passenger ferry opens the door to unique and breathtaking sites. We started our day trip by taking the Navigazione Lago Maggiore ferry across the lake to the 40-acre Villa Taranto Botanical Gardens. My only disappointment here was not budgeting enough time to truly appreciate the meticulously designed landscape featuring more than 80,000 blooming plants. On the way back to Stresa, we hopped off the ferry at one of the three Borromeo islands for lunch, Isola Pescatori, which is ringed with shoreside dining options. We walked off our sumptuous meal on Isola Bella, with its majestic terraced gardens and Baroque palace.
