“The winding drive way leads to a very special castle...”
Reviewed July 17, 2012

We stayed at La Vela Hotel and found the property to be a very special place. It is small, intimate, and very romantic. The room we had on the second floor had a gorgeous view of Santa Margherita. The room itself was comfortable, clean, with simple accomodations. There was satalitte tv, a/c, closet space, a fridge, and a comfy bed. The hotel is in the process of remodeling the room bathrooms so we had an older bathroom which i did not mind but others have been updated. There is breakfast served in the morning room and i recommend a cup of coffee in the back courtyard. I loved all the lush plants and flowers on the property too! Besides the lovely setting the owners, Livio and Leche were so warm and just a joy to chat with! We will return!

After reading the reviews we did have some questions before we arrived but as soon as we arrived we were thrilled. The grounds and building are lovely, everyone we encountered who worked there pleasant and very helpful. Our rooms had 10 foot ceilings, nicely appointed and great a/c, views to the ocean over the enchanting real life town of Santa Margherita. Breakfast was a nice selection in a large wonderful room also with views. Walking into the center of town/marina/ocean takes a short 10 min or so but the walk back is pretty uphill so you have to be ready for the trek or the $20 cab ride. Also as one other person mentioned the driveway is a bit of a challenge but we found a parking place and never took the car out of it's spot while we were there. We loved the place so much we've booked again in September and look forward to returning to this bit of paradise on the Italian Rivera (which we liked infinitely more than the French Riviera.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room on the First Floor (their First floor is our Second floor). They have a 3rd...

Easy to find. It's a winding road up through the garden to the little castle from the main road down to the St. Margherita . If you have a room with sea view, you will not be disappointed and it's very romanic. It is a short easy walk to the center of St. Margherita. But I do not recommend high heels. The hotel has only a breakfast room. Missing an opportunity to have a drink. The service was depending on who is manning the front desk. But may be it's because we did not speak Italian. If you are sensitive to sounds, you can not sleep with the window open because the train is heard very well.

We booked this on booking.com for one night and regretted not having booked the whole stay there. We walked there from the station and then back in town. It's on a windy road up a hill but there are stairs that make a shortcut to town so it really is walkable for the average person. The hotel is an old style castle/mansion with the charm of old Italy. Ask for a sea view room to get the sights of the bay (which we didn't get with the hotel we next booked in the town of Santa Margherita). Highly recommended for a romantic break or for those who like a more traditional/historic decor. The only thing is if you are sensitive of hearing you may pick up the train sounds from the station (I didn't when inside the hotel).

teh paalace is really beautiful, and so the view on the sea.
The parking area is very small and you have to be a good driver. Remember you have to walk approx 10 minutes to go to the cinty centre. Using your car is not recommended, as parking is very difficult to find

It's really special to spend a night in a castle. The drive up to the hotel is a bit hairy. Also there are few parking spots and turning onto the street is really dangerous.....but the beautiful garden and the amazing view makes up for it! I was a bit worried about the location but one can reach the town centre by steps in only a few minutes. The room was big, clean and quiet. We would have preferred a shower to a bathtub and would have liked an international news channel but that wasn't a problem for one night. One doesn't get too spoiled with breakfast in Italy. Juice and coffee came out of a self-service machine and didn't taste very nice but everything else was o.k. and the breakfast room very tastefully furnished with amazing views over the city. All in all a very pleasant experience with great value for money.

We paid 130 euro BB, the room was comfortable but small, and the service non existent. On arrival we were just handed a key, no help available for our luggage to climb 30 steps, breakfast just edible. Parking overcrowded and on departure the owner complained that he had to move two cars that obstructed our way out. Santa Margherita is beautiful and with a bit of patience you can surely select a better place to stay.
