“Great hotel. Crammed parking lot with valet. Rooms are old-fashioned”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 28, 2013

We are American tourists used to modernized rooms and ample parking, so the Metropole, with old-fashioned furniture and a crazy-busy parking lot (but with an efficient valet to maneuver the cars around) was a bit unusual. The included buffet breakfast on the terrace was excellent. We heard no road noise from our room in an annex south of the main building.

The hotel's location within walking distance of the town and right above the beach is great. We chose to stay here rather than in Portofino and are happy that we made that decision.

After very thorough research, I chose this hotel because of location and facilities. We were on a 6 week driving tour through Europe and so car parking was important. I knew that S.M.L. is a special place and that all hotels there were pricey. I'm so glad that I chose The Metropole as our room in the red beach house was lovely with a little verandah right on the beach promenade. The grounds were grand and extremely well maintained! The buffet breakfast on the terrace was equally enjoyable and the staff were always available to help with any request. This hotel is situated in between Portofino and Cinque Terre, so was a perfect base. S.M.L. Is a beautiful town in itself and my husband was very impressed by it!! We took a boat trip to Portofino for the day and that was fabulous. We took the train down to Cinque Terre and visited all 5 villages ( liked all of them except Corniglia ). It was always great to come home each night to The Metropole and our 3 nights there will always be remembered as a highlight of our European trip. Highly recommend staying there and hope to go back one day...

Room Tip: So long as you close the window near the road, any room should be fine!

Excellent location edge of the city overlooking the sea and harbour of Santa Margherita. First class service and accommodations. Fine breakfast and 2 restaurants [one is outside overlooking the sea] for all dining engagements. Well stocked bar with a sizable selection of fine regional wines. Gardens and grounds of unequaled beauty. Lovely swimming pool, spa and fitness center.
Attended by the owner and a professional staff of many years employment

Room Tip: The staff will answer all inquiries and requests

This is a great hotel! You can easily walk to all of the shops/restaurants in the area. You are also right on the water and they have a nice area to lay by the sea. The breakfast is great (servers slightly snobby). Our room was very large and had a gorgeous outdoor terrace.

We stayed here for seven nights. I have stayed in several hotels in Santa Margherita over the past twenty years and I think the Metropole must be just about best placed. It is on the water's edge and is a short, pleasant stroll along the promenade to the town centre. The views across the bay to Portofino etc are wonderful. The road is close and noisy but did not impact on our sea view room.
It is well maintained with a well equipped fitness suite - we enjoyed the steam room. Breakfast is a standard buffet with a reasonable choice. Dinner would be expensive at the carte price of €44 but by committing to half board we were charged €22 which was good value. There are lots of good restaurants in town and they would cost much more. I opted for what counts as economy in Santa Margherita these days - it is a very expensive resort now. The staff were all helpful and friendly with only a couple of slip-ups. I love Santa Margherita and chose the Metropole this year because of availability. I suspect that next year I might choose it as the most suitable for us - good quality without being too grand.

Room Tip: Our top floor sea view was great. Definitely avoid the road side.

I stayed at the Metropole with my Grandfather. We both liked the hotel and found it to be comfy, clean and a nice place.

Upon arrival we were upgraded from a twin room to a Junior Suite which was a nice size with two equally nice sized balconies with stunning views towards Santa Margherita and Rapallo.

The hotel staff were very friendly and although some of them didn't speak much English they went out of their way to make our staty the best it could be.

Breakfast was good with a wide selection of help yourself buffet foods.

Dinner in the evening was equally as good, €44 per person for 4 courses unless going half board in which case it is €22 per person for four courses.

Reception staff were friendly and helpful and the maintenance man arrived within minutes when the safe in pur suite wouldn't open. Again although having little English he managed to fix the safe for us.

If you are needing a good wifi signal then you might be in for a shock, the free hotel internet network bearly showed two bars of signal on my tablet computer and kelt showing webpage unavailable messages periodically. Equally the bath seemed to take forever to fill to a reasonable level of water (about 15 mins at least) and when full the water was only just a tad hotter than being lukewarm. Being in a suite on the most top floor could well have been a factor in tbe poor wifi reception, lukewarm water and slow flow from the bath taps.

Nonetheless we enjoyed our stay at the Metropole and would stay again next time we are on holiday in Santa Margherita.

The staff at the family owned Hotel Metropole are exceptionally friendly and helpful. I had a nice conversation with one of them (sorry, but I forgot her name) about the meaning of my family name, which is of Sicilian origin, which she eagerly wrote down the English translation so she would remember it. It really made me feel special. In fact, all the staff did. The room we had was spacious with a small sitting area with a couch. It had two balconies which afforded us a glimpse of the sea (some of the other rooms have better views. The free in-room WiFi is a bit "iffy", but usually reconnects quickly. Breakfasts on the terrace (weather permitting) was nice, with all the usual Italian tourist stuff. Good coffee. Bathroom was larger than usually found in Italy. It is also close to the town center and the railroad station (without any noise). The only negative comment is that we found a grossly dirty glass in the mini-fridge.
