“Charming old world Italian experience”
Reviewed July 17, 2013

This hotel was fantastic – old world charm in a truly lovely location. We had a junior suite (room 185) located on the top floor. The room looked much nicer in reality than how it was depicted on their website which was pleasing for us. It had a huge verandah but this was a little noisy as our room was on the end of the building where the main road was. The only negative comment related to the cleanliness of the verandah. Upon arrival there was a dirty ashtray on the outside table and the tiled verandah flooring left our feet black with dirt – it could really do with a major scrub!

The breakfast was very nice and the staff were attentive. We did use the beach area each afternoon. Whilst you had to pay for the sun beds, the deck chairs were free of charge. We used these and found them more than satisfactory for a couple of hours of beach time. The deck chairs were positioned in the same central locations as the sun beds. The pool area is also very nice and peaceful. We really liked the beach bar as well. The drinks were very reasonably priced and the view was magical.

The hotel is truly a wonderful example of the way the best European hotels offer style, grace and service. There was a wide variety of guests from all over Europe with all ages represented. You will feel immediately included within the graceful hotel by the experienced staff. Our main waiter, Bernardo, learned our breakfast preferences on the first day of our visit and served us perfectly the next several days.
The grounds are simply gorgeous with perfect flowers lining the tops of the walls on the path down to the beach club. A feeling of old world charm is the best way to describe the hotel. Americans should be so lucky to find a hotel such as this one anywhere in the United States.
Our room had a lovely terrace and was quiet and peaceful. We spent two days at the beach enjoying the ambiance, food, and the protected swimming in the sea.
Santa Margherita is one of the best resort towns in Liguria with nice shops, restaurants, and great views.

We stayed here in July 2013. The hotel is gorgeous, a little "traditional Italian" with beautiful gardens and a fantastic view.
Our room was on the 4th floor with large balcony to have wine each afternoon. A gorgeous pool area which always had enough sun beds and it's own beach - although it's really just rocks!
Sun beds at the beach area cost extra. And way too many screaming kids there.
Breakfast had plenty of options and was on the large terrace overlooking the gardens and seaside.
Conviently located, 100 metres down hill from the train station, but you did not hear trains at all.
An approx 150 metre walk to the main street with restraunts and cafes but this would be uphill on the way back so may deter those with mobility issues.
We stayed 2 nights here, but would have loved a third night to just enjoy the pool!
We would return, even if it's a little on the expensive side, it was wonderful.

We loved both Santa Margherita & Hotel Metropole. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, we particularly enjoyed the pool area late in the afternoon and also returning from dinner at night and sitting out on the terrace with coffee and liqueurs. Superb breakfast included in the price. On our last morning we were leaving early and the the hotel made coffee for us and prepared breakfast packs for us to eat on the train, much appreciated. Santa Margherita is centrally located to other attractions and only a short ferry trip to Portofino for a beautiful lunch.

Firstly, if you are considering whether or not to stay in this region then please do. Santa Margherita Ligure is stunningly beautiful and the Metropole is superbly situated right on the water. Rooms are smallish but are in excellent order and very clean. Outside the rooms is typically Italian noisy with all the scooters and holiday makers but double glazing will ensure peace and quiet. The grounds are beautifully kept and staff are first rate. This hotel takes its job seriously! Out and about the train is a short walk away as are the ferries. A walk to Portofino will take around 2 hours with a regular 20min ferry trip back. Other ferries or train will take you to places like the Cinque Terre. We stayed 3 nights but 4 would allow extended trips. You won't regret your stay here.

This is an older hotel with beautiful grounds. The lobby and common areas are updated and nice but rooms are in need of updating. They are clean and bright, just older.. They do not have any triple rooms available. The bathrooms are well appointed. The hotel is on the water but has no beach front, only stairs to water. It is part of a beach club so very busy. Breakfast buffet was lovely and offered a wide variety of foods. Very close to train station if you are traveling by train.
Free Internet was very sporadic.

Dear Sirs,

we would like to thank you for taking your time to speak about your stay at the Hotel Metropole and are happy to read some positive feedbacks about your stay at our hotel .
Nevertheless we do not understand some remarks that we have found even not corresponding to the real lie of the land:

- The hotel DOES have triple rooms and also has larger rooms that can accommodate up to five persons; as all our rooms they might be unavailable in certain periods
- We do not think that any part of the hotel might be considered as “old” as every year we take care of renovating parts of the structure (in the last years we have renovated/refurbished many rooms, bathrooms, common areas, lobby and beach)
- We have a wide private beach (as visible in our web site in the Virtual Tour); we cannot really understand your “the hotel has no beach front “ ! Our water front is 81 mt and all the beach is 2551,20 sq/mt and for this area we pay the rent at the municipality.

We hope that we will have the opportunity to serve you again in the future.and in the meanwhile, please accept our best regards.

I stayed here with a friend June 9-10, 2013. We had a room with two twin beds and a wonderful balcony with a marvelous view. After staying in an ultra-modern hotel in Milan, this hotel was definitely a reality check back to the typical old Italian hotels. The room could use some updating, but it was perfectly fine. The location was a short walk to town and the train station. Note: We arrived by train from Milan late at night. Not knowing where the hotel was, we took a taxi -- which cost us 20 Euros, a ridiculous price. When we inquired about this at the hotel, the person at the desk said the price is usually 15 to 20 Euros, so at least we didn't feel cheated. What he also told us was the hotel was only about 700 meters from the station, and we could easily walk! Needless to say, we walked to the station when it was time to return to Milan. I wish we had known this ahead of time, but you can't plan for every situation...

We had breakfast included in our rate, and we thought it was wonderful. The waiters were very attentive, and the food was replenished regularly. I particularly appreciated all the fresh fruit available.

I also used the small fitness center, which was more than adequate, except there was no water fountain.

The wifi was free and worked well.

The pool and grounds are beautiful, with lots of flowers and a nice walkway to the small beach area. If it had been warmer, we would have enjoyed sitting at the bar next to the beach for drinks. Alas, you also can't control the weather, and it was too chilly to sit at the pool or beach.

The only issue was the water didn't work the second morning we were there. After about a half hour, it worked, but it was brown when it came out of the faucet for a few minutes. But it's an old resort hotel, so these things happen. It didn't make us angry or anything, but we have been living in Europe for two years as American expats, and traveling quite a bit, so things like this don't make or break a trip for us.

We loved Santa Margherita Ligure -- lots of shops, restaurants and nice places to walk around. Just remember many shops close between 1 and 3:30! The hotel desk person recommended an excellent restaurant, Il Nostromo, which turned out to be the best meal of our trip to northwestern Italy.

I would definitely return for a visit and stay at the Metropole.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony facing the gardens and sea, the higher floor the better.
