“Beautiful grounds and great staff”
Reviewed June 17, 2013

Hotel Metropole is just a 5 minute walk from the train station. Our room was a suite with a double room and a further single bed in a separate room. The room (111) had a very large terrace overlooking the beautiful gardens, pool and a view of the sea. The room was spacious and clean.

Breakfast was delicious - perhaps too delicious - far too tempting to eat too much.

The staff were great; knowledgable, helpful and friendly. Planning trips to Cinque Terre and Genova was much easier with their help.

We liked the hotel very much but you can hear a lot of traffic noise when you are at the pool. Santa Margherita is a popular resort for motor cyclists. It certainly did not ruin our stay but if you want peace and quiet then perhaps stay further away from the road.

We enjoyed some lovely meals in Santa Margherita. Our favourite restaurant was Il Nostromo where I had the nicest tiramisu ever.

We have stayed at the Metropole on a number of occassions and all of our stays have been first class. The hotel is set in beautiful gardens , with wonderful beachfront facilities and an excellent beach front restuarant. It is also only a few minutes walk from the railway station which makes it a great choice for visting areas such as the Cinque Terre. it is also within walking distance of Portofino or you can easily catch a local bus or go by boat from the harbour
The staff are wonderful with all requests been dealt with in a friendly and very efficent manner.
Each guest is made to feel very special and welcome.Rooms are spacious with great views over the harbour. Great breakfast on a sunny terrace.
I would highly recommend.

We stayed two nights in an upgraded (30 euros more) room - overlooking the gardens and sea. The hotel is great, only a five minute walk from the railroad station and short walk to town. It has beautiful grounds, secluded garden, comfortable lounges around the pool and wonderful setting on the Mediterranean. Breakfast is elaborate on the sunny patio.
It is slightly noisy due to the ubiquitous scooters on the busy street.
Santa Margherita is a better option than more expensive Portofino which can be readily reached with the inexpensive and fun local bus (1.5 euros) or ferry (6 euros) - either for incredible views.

Room Tip: Spring for the corner rooms which have both garden and sea views.

Enroute to Lucca I decided to visit Santa Margherita Ligure, a charming town located between Portofino and Camogli that reviewers rated it a good base for visiting the Cinque Terre and coast. As my usual preference I looked for a good place close to the train station and chose Hotel Metropole. It didn’t disappoint. Located about 150 meters below the train station Hotel Metropole offers an oasis on its expansive grounds with lovely gardens, a sea view and outstanding service. My single room was in the”villas” reached by a cobbled jasmine covered pathway down the hill from the main building. The villa had 6 rooms, most facing the water, but without balconies. My windows opened to the Santa Margherita Harbor and I enjoyed the sound of the waves and at night the sparkling lights around the bay and the promenade. Housekeeping service was impeccable and included nightly turn-down service. For muting sound and added security the room had 2 locking doors. Breakfast was served on the outdoor terrace and in addition to an array of fruits, pastries, cheeses, meats and cereals, sparkling wine was offered. As others have said, the staff was very nice and very helpful. It was so relaxing and enjoyable I was really sorry to leave so soon. Now that I experienced Hotel Santa Margherita Ligure I am planning next year’s stay, with added days to enjoy the other amenities like the spa, and Turkish bath and enjoy the beach.

Room Tip: Choose water side

The Metropole was perfect! Lovely contemporary rooms (we were two couples are our two rooms both overlooked the beautiful Santa Margherita Harbor). The gardens were lovely, breakfast delicious and all desk clerks accommodating and informative. It took us a long time to decide on our hotel for our three days in the area, and we were delighted with our choice

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the harbor; corner if you can get it. It may be a little more expens...

There's plenty of parking if you arrive by car, but If you come by train the hotel is only three blocks from the station. The complimentary full breakfast every morning was amazing and the staff was friendly and very professional. I loved the gardens and the private beach too. Keep in mind this hotel is near a main street to Rapallo and can at times be a little noisy. The front desk staff was always very helpful with providing maps, bus/train schedules and I'm sure anything else you can think of. It was my fault for not booking with this hotel sooner I managed to get the last available room. It wasn't all perfect...I wasn't use to an extra firm bed, but I did sleep well; the a/c pumped out cool air with a touch of cigarette smell when the adjacted guest lit one up. If I opened my balcony door to my private patio I might get car exhaust from the busy street. I'm sure if I would have stayed in another section of the hotel I would not have had these problems. Also if you're thinking about getting a massage through the hotel you may want to pass, especially if you prefer anything deep tissue. Thank you to the hotel staff for helping in making my trip a good one!

Room Tip: Ask for a room that faces the waterfront in the main building and try to avoid the yellow building.

Hotel Metropole is wonderfully located hotel by the seaside. Their garden was so beautiful with well kept shrubs, trees and flowers that you almost didn't want to move from here. The walk way down to the water was so enchanting with the vegetation it most certainly felt like it was a minature nature stroll. Our room was a suite and was very clean and spacious. The terrace was so quaint and this is where breakfast was served. Full breakfast with the price of the room and it was very good. Cappacinos and cornetti were delicious. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Once down to the water the view was incredible. Yachts, boats and mountains in the distance. Restaurants and shops lined the harbour with cobble streets in behind the main road and
more shops and restaurants. There was definitely more to this seaside resort than shops and
restaurants. Here it had some architecture and culture. Their pizza and scallopine al limone was superb. The hotel was in a great location and close to everything. It was a five to ten minute walk to the train station. We went to the Cinque Terre which I thoroughly recommend to anyone! The 5 fishermen villages based on the Ligurian coastline with the mountains behind are a breathtaking sight. Corniglia was the highlight . We climb 385 steps to the hilltop and then had wine, beer and assorted cheeses in an outdoor restaurant patio! The views and the food was unbelievable!!! Of course you don't have to do the stairs. There is a bus or a path you can stroll up to the top. It's not really difficult you can do it on your own pace. Monterosso was also beautiful to see! This village had a beach and lovely scenic views. The 5 villages are one stop after another on the train line. So easy just get on and off and they are 5 minutes apart from each other. Highly recommend Santa Margherita Ligure, Cinque Terre and Portofino in this area.

Room Tip: Suite was great for 3 or more people. It had a separate room for sleeping.
