This was one of the nicest hotels and towns that we have visited in Italy. The breakfast is fantastic and the pastries are the best I have ever had (I have a terrible sweet tooth!). The location is great with a 3 minute walk to the rail station. The staff are very helpful and friendly, particularly Rosa who speaks very good English. Don't waste your time staying on the cinque terra, simply stay here and catch the train for your walking tour then get the train back. A tip for those who are not totally flush with funds; there are a couple of supermarkets in the back streets which are difficult to find, however places where you can get some cheap supplies when needed. For those who like to exercise, the hotel also has a reasonable gym which is rarely used but has very good machines.

We spent three nights in the end room facing the highway. The room amenities are a bit spartan, i.e, no comfortable chair, but there was a built if 60's era pants presser that was amusing. Great view of the sea and town, but traffic noises required that the windows remain closed most of the day. Very good breakfast buffet. Great sea side lounging area, good pool, excellent grounds. Just a short walk to the city center.

After 3 nights in Verona we spent 3 nights in Santa Margharita Ligure before heading on to 3 nights in Varenna, Lake Como.
It is an easy walk to the hotel downhill from train station-
exit the station, walk down the tiny hill on the left and the hotel is across the street.
Our room #107 overlooked the beautiful harbor. It was also facing the busy street so a bit noisy when windows are open but not a problem for us.
Bathroom is small and compact but fixtures are new and glistening. Hairdryer is in an odd place and I was glad I had brought my own. I was happy I had a hanging toiletry bag because the shelves in the bathroom were not convenient.
The bedroom was clean and spacious and had great shelving and closet.
The breakfast buffet was excellent. The first morning the weather was nice they served it out on the terrace. The hotel has beautiful gardens and swimming pool area. We never walked down to their beach area. There are many nice options for sitting in the lounges and terrace.
The staff was very friendly and helpful.
The Internet did not work in our room but okay down in the lobby.
We had a fabulous day walking to Portofino. Took about 90 minutes because we stopped for lots of pictures. Once in Portofino walked all the way out to the lighthouse. We were planning to take 2pm ferry back to SML but found all afternoon ferries had been cancelled. Checked into bus but didn't want to wait so we ended up walking back- briskly in 50 minutes.
Due to inclement weather and landslides we were not able to hike Cinque Terre but took train to Monterosso and Vernazza for the day. Surprised by the huge crowds on a very rainy Wednesday in late September.
Enjoyed great dinners 2 nights at Trattoria da Pezzi and one night at Trattoria Baicin.
We enjoyed Santa Margherita Ligure very much!

This hotel is the definition of what you do not want. The staff is surly, the hotel is something out of the 1950's in decor, and the average age is well over 55. We had a suite which included a balcony with white plastic chairs and table. The decor of the room is all run down and dated. The bathroom is so tiny I had to put my toiletries in the bidet since there was no room on the sink! There is no place to eat in town and the place is mobbed with the large tour boats that come in and dump thousands of people. Of our two weeks in Italy, this hotel gets the prize for "The Worst Place to Stay."

Dear Madam,

we would like to thank you for taking your time to speak about your stay at the Hotel Metropole.
We are sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations; the reviews of our many loyal and happy guests evidence our services and quality.
Though we respect your dissatisfaction, we can assure you, that our staff and management guarantee professional attention towards all our guests.

About the junior suite with two terraces on the top floor, we would like to evidence some points:

- The room was built seven years ago together with the whole 4th floor (before that time the hotel used to have just three floors) and offer a beautiful view of the park and sea that embrace even Portofino lighthouse !
The new pavement was laid just at the end of 2011 while the wall tapestry is less than two years old. The bathroom has been appreciated by several Guests having also a ceiling-window,; the chairs on the terrace are not in plastic but in resin from Roverganden , one the most expensive lines of garden chairs/tables..
-
About the Boats we need to explain that in Santa Margherita arrived this summer only 17 and remain 1300 mt far from the harbor and in Portofino 105 !!

We hope that we will have the opportunity to better serve you in the future and in the meanwhile, please accept our best regards.

The staff are lovely - very friendly, helpful and courteous. The hotel is obviously family run and the staff take an interest. The outdoor terrace is pretty although the views from there are not as stunning as those from the Continental - but by contrast the beach area for the Metropole is more extensive and the wifi works down by the beach area! The beach restaurant serves the best food I have had at lunch in Italy. The gym is good and there is a pool unlike many hotels in Santa. The breakfast was good - there is lots of fresh fruit and the usual croissants, bread, ham, egg, cheese, plus jam. There is also prosecco! I had a single room which was very small but that was no issue as I spent all my time at the seaside area (and unlike some places I could pick exactly where I fancied having a sunbed). The price was very good for the area and if you don't want to splash out on the Continental or Imperial this is a very good choice. Road side rooms can be noisy - as with all Santa hotels. So ask for a room away from the road if this is an issue for you.
