“Excellent Stay at Hotel Villa Anita”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2012

So there is a really good reason why this hotel is on the top of Trip Advisor's list in Santa Margherita Ligure: it is everything that all the other reviewers have said, and more. Our family of five took three rooms here for six nights from September 1-7. We unanimously agreed it was our best family vacation.

Sandro and his mother, Danielle, are incredible hosts. They give each guest individual attention. They never seem to tire of the questions they get from their many guests. They slip easily from Italian to English to German to French. They had infinite patience and graciousness to direct us to the train stations, and to the many options for reaching the Cinque Terre, or Genoa, or Portofino, Parragi, or Rapollo or Camogli.

Add to this (and included in the room rate) the most amazing breakfast buffet you will ever see. Sparkling fresh fruits, fresh breads for toasting, fresh squeezed juices, cheeses, sliced ham, free range hen eggs for soft boiling, a wide array of cereals, and the topper of all: an array of warm pastries made by Danielle. For each guest, she also makes large pots of fabulously smooth Italian coffee with steamed milk. It was heavenly! To make it even more amazing: the relaxing deck where we enjoyed our breakfast on nice mornings. On the rainy days, the dining room was delightful.

The sleeping rooms are immaculately clean, and much larger than I expected. Very comfortable beds, lots of storage space, and very well organized bathrooms with sleek Italian-designed plumbing fixtures. And very nice mountain and village views from each of the room we had.

If you are considering the Ligurian coast, I highly recommend you make Hotel Villa Anita your home base. Although we had a car, we left it in the hotel's parking lot for our entire visit. We walked everywhere, or road the hotel's bicycles, or took the train, or boats or buses. It was incredibly easy to get to town. I also highly recommend the walk to Portofino, and taking the bus back. Don't miss the beach at Parragi, and be sure to visit the bar at the Hotel Splendido for a real treat.

Sandro gave us great recommendations for dinner each night. We were eating very late, so we missed Danielle's dinners at 7:30. But on our last night, we decided to eat on the hotel terrace. Her amazing, true Ligurian and Genovese dishes made us sincerely regret that we had eaten dinner at the hotel only once. A good reason to return, and we will be back!

There is only one caution that I would give: if you have any mobility issues this is probably not the hotel for you, as there are many stairs. It did help us burn off a few more calories, though!

Room Tip: The top floor suite is very private and has lovely views of the mountains

Well within walking distance of the train station and set in one of the hills overlooking the town, this is a lovely little place to stay. I cannot say anything new to compliment this hotel that hasn't been said by all the other reviewers, but I would suggest that if they did lunch, laundry and a couple of other services, it would easily get a higher star rating than the official 2 it holds at present. I would warn anyone with mobility issues travelling without their own car that it is not in a very accessible location (shuttle to/from train station might be a decent idea for them to start up, but it is a family business so may not be practicable)

Our room was well appointed and very clean and the maids do an excellent job every day. The breakfast was very nice and plenty of it to satisfy even the heartiest appetite.

Daniella and her son Sandro are charming well educated hosts that can give great advice to those requiring it. The pool/jacuzzi is excellent to use to unwind and very clean.

We only ate dinner there once and it was very reasonable compared to the local restaurants; the area is expensive, however it appeared rather 'rushed' and the young lad dishing it up seemed to bang the courses out as quickly as possible - he obviously had a long day as he had left and turned the lights off before we had finished our wine! But in all, it was tasty food and the terrace is lovely.

In summary, we were very glad we booked here in the end. It is a lovely place and we were completely at home for our time there.

I stayed for 5 nights with my brother and his family at the Hotel Villa Anita and we were all happy with everything about the hotel. The price was great for the wonderful breakfast, the location, the rooms and the service from Sandro and his lovely mother. It was a mixture of great value, warm hospitality and great food...my favourite combination.

Sandro was helpful and knowledgeable about the area, train times, how to take boats, trains and when to walk to see other villages like Portofino, Rapallo and the Cinque Terre area. He made everything easy for us.

His mother baked all the pastries at breakfast herself every morning. It was really amazing. The cappuccinos and lattes she made were so smooth and delicious I couldn't believe it. I gave up drinking coffee over two years ago and had to give in. We stayed for dinner at the hotel our last night and were all so happy we did. Dinner was just as great as breakfast. It's small and family run and they work so hard the food always has beautiful presentation, is fresh and delicious.

The only thing I would prepare you for is that the beds are a hard and the pillows are like rocks...but I think that's just Italy. The Hotel Villa Anita is one of the warmest, family run hotels I've stayed at during my travels. I'll never forget Sandro's mothers home made pastries and fresh coffee at breakfast.

This is the ideal  place to return to in late afternoon if you are tired of the sound of waves, scooters, boat engines and tourist crowds. Have an excellent dinner on the tree shaded terrace, finish it with a grappa, then retreat to your balcony and enjoy the smells of a tranquil Italian summer evening. You may understand then why, in our world, quiet is the last remaining true luxury.  We just loved it and will return same time next year.

On our Holiday Trip with family we had the chance to spend 3 nights in Hotel Villa Anita. Great Value, extremely helpful staff and an excellent base to visit Portofino, the Paraggi beach (easy by bus) and the Cinque Terre (easy by train). The hotel is conveniently placed, 5 min walk to beachfront + bus-stop, 15-20 min from the train-station. We left the car on their private car-park and walked everywhere. There is a small swimming pool just to cool off on a hot day with some deck-chairs (and enough cold beer). The rooms are well equipped with air-conditioning and most have a balcony. I am a frequent (business) traveller and I think the 3-star is underrated - deserves more. I highly recommend this place.

Room Tip: Enough rooms with balcony, very nice!

We had a wonderful time at hotel Villa Anita during our stay in July. the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Of great assistance with our daily excursions and restaurant recommendations. Breakfast buffet was very tasty with the homemade cakes - must not be missed. The 4 of us were comfortable in our room. Very pleasant stay.

If you're looking for a lower-cost option to Portofino or Santa Margherita Ligure (SML), this is a great place. It's on the quieter, nicer side of SML, closer to Portofino. The walk to Portofino is a beautiful 3 miles along the picturesque coastline. The town of SML is beautiful as well, with many shops, cafes, pastel buildings and gellaterias. You can go swimming off the rocks and public beaches along the way. The owners are a family, and they do a great job. They recommended La Lampana, a restaurant down the road, which was fantastic. The pool is really cool, with 5 different styles of massage jets. The rooms have A/C which comes in use in the summers in Italy.

Room Tip: To avoid the steps, you can follow the road signs. The grade is less but the distance is more.
