“Good location + free parking but eat elsewhere if you like to linger over dinner!”
Reviewed June 8, 2012

We stayed a couple of nights in a standard double room which was fairly basic but clean. The owner and son were welcoming and helpful. The hotel is ideally situated for walking into town and the onsite parking is a big plus point for the area. The breakfast buffet was fine and the terrace is a lovely spot for taking breakfast.

We decided to take dinner in the evenings at the hotel and on reflection this was probably a mistake. You must pre-order during the day. The cooking was fine but guests are required to turn up all together and the food is brought out to serve everyone all at once. For slow eaters this can mean that the second course arrives just as you are about to pick up the fork for the first course - and don't expect to have time to drink your wine! It is the first time I have had a four course meal in under 45 minutes! I wondered if the chef and waiter had a bus to catch ... ! The waiter was actually very charming and presumably just bringing the food out from the kitchen as it came up. Maybe when the hotel is fuller, there is more of a natural pace to the service. Overall, the brisk pace meant there wasn't time to relax and enjoy the food and wine. On the other hand, families with young children might appreciate getting dinner over with quickly!

Our family of 4 from Canada spent 5 days at the Hotel Villa Anita in Santa Margherita Ligure - May 24 - 28th inclusive. Loved the location - quiet but a very close walk to the ocean, shopping and restaurants. Our room had a balcony and we loved sitting there in the mornings and evenings. There was a Church on the hilltop so we could hear the Church bells ringing every now and then - loved it. We also had a car so free parking right at the hotel was appreciated. This family run hotel is top notch. They were all very friendly and helpful when asking for advice. The breakfast was absolutely fabulous. The pool was a pleasant surprise - looks like it was recently installed. We couldn't have asked for a better hotel and we definitely would recommend it to anyone travelling to this area. Santa Margherita is an excellent place to stay while travelling to the Cinque Terre and other nearby resorts. We walked to Portofino from SML twice - once through the park which took around 2 hours one way (lots of climbing but great exercise) and then we took the ferry back. The second time we walked by the ocean which took about 1 hour each way including stopping time for photos - beautiful views. I miss Italy so much and can't wait to return to SML.

Stayed here three nights in May 2012 and could not have been happier with this hotel. The staff run by Daniela and her son made this place feel more like home than hotel. Knowing that we would be arriving late we pre-ordered a meat and cheese plate which was already set up in the room when we arrived. The location is a short walk up from the water, not a big town so 10 minutes walk could get you everywhere. The room looked to have been recently remodeled and modern and we took the upgrade to the room with the outdoor terrace which was well worth the added cost. Breakfast served each morning was a delicious assortment of breads, fruits, coffee which was all very good and they had free wi-fi throughout the hotel.

I can't say enough good things about this hotel. While the hotel itself was great, the service and staff was so warm and welcoming that it makes this place second to none. Cannot wait to return for another visit!

The hotel is family run by a mother and son team of who are the nicest people. They were extremely helpful with maps, directions, reservations, you name it. The hotel is just a short walk from town and offers free parking which was a plus for us (you don't need a car in the town itself, we were driving all over the country). The rooms are spacious and clean and we were welcomed with apples, strawberries and a bottle of water in the room - such a nice touch! They also included a tote bag with towels and slippers for their new pool. There was a small balcony with a table and chairs which was wonderful to sit out on and relax and enjoy the surrounding beauty of the garden and neighborhood. The breakfast spread was amazing! Homemade cakes and treats, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereals, meat, cheese, fish, bread for toasting, eggs for hard boiling, jams and honey galore! And freshly made coffee/cappuccino and an assortment of teas. We did not eat at the hotel restaurant, but I can only imagine that the dinners must have been amazing as well. Hotel Villa Anita is a true gem and I'm so thankful to the reviewers on Trip Advisor for helping us decide to book it!

Welcoming. Quiet. Bright. Spacious. Accommodating. Informative. Well priced. Basically we thought the position was fine. It was great to walk home when we had a belly full of pasta. We would not hesitate to recommend staying here to anyone. We wouldn't bother looking at anything else when we next visit. No request is too much. We had an injury and an ice pack was provided. Go one stay here, I dare you.

This hotel is very deserving of its #1 ranking. We had a lovely stay earlier this month. The hotel is up a hill (bit of a climb with the stroller and luggage but we survived!) and in a beautiful setting. When we arrived, our room was ready for us with a second bed for our toddler, and a crib for the baby. The room was clean and comfortable. A large door opened up onto a small balcony. The bathroom had a window which was a nice feature. Breakfast was good - a large variety and good coffee.

The staff are wonderful. We received a warm welcome upon arrival, good restaurant suggestions, a little bathing kit for each of the kids (including a cloth puppet which my sons love and we continue to use), and extra personal touches. We were even driven to the train station the next day so we didn't have to walk with all of our luggage - so nice!

We walked to Portofino for an afternoon activity - definitely a highlight of our trip to Italy and I highly recommend it.

Where do I start...

My girlfriend and I stayed here last summer planning to stay for 2 nights, we were on a road trip, but the hotel and the surroundings were so beautiful that we ended up staying for 8 nights. If we only could have stayed longer, our jobs were waiting....

I promised the owners to write a review, so here I go, just in time for the next season.

We did not make a reservation, we read the reviews on tripadvisor and just knocked on the door. We were lucky because they had 1 room left.

The thing is that it is a 2 star hotel (we can't afford more in that area, lol) but the rooms are nice and clean, the breakfast is nice and the dinners at night are brilliant. It is just so much more than you would expect. This is why this hotel earns the excellent mark.

And then there is the staff, it is family owned and run. They are just the most friendly people. They make sure that you are comfortable all the time and have the best tips.

The hotel is located 200 metres uphill from the harbor and lies in an excellent location. You can do everything on foot, and you should, try to avoid driving. If you want to go to Portofino or Rapallo take the boat.

All beaches, bars and restaurants are within walking distance.

The ideal day is as follows:
Have breakfast on the terrace, than drink a coffee in the Caffe del Porto and do a little people watching. Have a walk around town, or a more serious walk through the park to Portofino (3 hours), play tennis at the very chic country club in Rapallo (http://www.golfetennisrapallo.it/) they only charge € 6 per hour to play tennis, the shower in the fancy locker room alone is even worth more! Or if you have some serious money to spend rent a little boat and cruise down to San Fruttuoso.
Lunchtime, you can have a good lunch literally everywhere.
In the afternoon go to the beach and have beers and a swim to cool off. Be aware that some beaches are more expensive than others.

Go back to the hotel and sit in the garden / sleep for an hour and go for diner, we had diner in the hotel four nights and it was very nice each time. The other nights we went out for diner, once in Portofino, which was more expensive than the rest of the trip together... So if you are on a budget. I recommend to ask the hotel staff for the latest hot spots.

At night, I hear especially in August, because it is the Italian holiday month, there are so many things to do. Almost every night everyone gets out on the street all dressed up. There are DJ's playing near the harbor in the open air, but there are also classical concerts on the city square.

Santa Margherita obviously is pretty expensive and that is why this hotel is such a little gem. It is possible to have the experience for a good price.

To be honest we are planning to go to Sardinia this summer, however thinking about it makes me want to go back!
