“Feel Right at Home!”
Reviewed May 10, 2013

We toured France, Italy and Switzerland for 30 days and i must say this hotel left quite an impression on us. Firstly I think we must be the only guests there, but this family run establishment did not slacken on their service. Instead they went out of the way to make us feel comfortable. We enjoyed chatting with Mrs Pia very much. Her son Erik, cooks well and we were well fed. We choose to have set dinner at the hotel for 2 nights, having had a bad eating experience at one of the restaurants called La Cambusa, and the hotel sure didnt disappoint! Location wise, SML is a great base to explore the Italian Riviera. We visited Cinque Terre, Portofino, and the surrounds from here. Overall, the hotel is fairly aged/shabby, but being a historical sort of building with a rustic charm, we didn't really mind it. Well, everything worked! And the hospitality, warmth & friendliness you would not find easily in other places. We'll bring the whole family the next time!

Wonderful location... just a few blocks from the water.. We walked there easily from the train station. (However, had to help mom with her luggage.. a bit much for a 78 year old.)
The staff was very friendly and accomodating. The breakfast offering was very nice.. especially compared to the 2 previous Italian tourist locations we'd stayed in. I appreciated the beautiful capuccino our server made for each of us. We took advantage of the outside seating in the garden setting.. and played ping-pong for a break from the sight seeing. Loved that there was a computer with free internet access in the lobby for a quick check in on flights. You can't beat the value!

I stay in this hotel every year in October for the last 7 or 8 years. It feels like home. It's just a breath away from the waterfront and 100 meters from the Duomo square. The train station is a 5 minute walk and the neighborhood is quiet.
It is owned by a family and Mrs Pia (who speaks about 5 languages) is the heart of it all.
The breakfast is great for a 3-star Italian hotel, the hotel even has bicycles for guests (not that I took one, ever), the rooms are nice a comfortable (except 1-2 times that I stayed in a tiny room as I was traveling alone and reserved late). Actually, just about every room is different. I like the upper floors as there is a nicer view. The tiny lift tends to be a nuisance as it has those old doors that the last person has to close the lift doors after use so it can come down/up to you, but all these small things are insignificant compared to the whole atmosphere. Recently there is a WiFi throughout but signal is not that reliable.
I will check it next October and let you know of updates.

Room Tip: My favorite room is #26...with the biggest verandah

We arrived with nothing booked and the tourist bureau gave me a list of hotels. I randomly picked this one without checking first on TripAdvisor but we are so glad we stayed here. It is a lovely cosy old hotel run by a charming gregarious lady and her equally welcoming husband. Our room was large and comfortable. We had a balcony with a fantastic view. The breakfast was really good. The host made us great cappuccinos at the drop of a hat. The welcome mat is definitely permanently out at this hotel. Old world charm from days gone by and character overload. good value. Stay here.

Riviera di Levante, magnificent cliffs and the Ligurian Sea, the bay Lord Byron and H.C. Andersen fell in love with and after them millions of visitors over the years. Hotel Mediterraneo is an old private villa, built in the 1700's, the rooms are large with old beatiful spesifics like parquet floors and beatifully framed windows. The villa has a lovely garden that unfortunately is a filled with the cars of the visitors but that might be the only solution as it is impossible to park along the narrow streets and the cars are safe inside the iron gates and stone walls. The terrace is beautifully surrounded by pot garden filled with hortensias in blooming in July. We even played table tennis on the terrace. The breakfast included was excellent - fruits, yogurts, cereals, cheeses, hams, different types of bread, fresly baked croisants, cappuccino, etc. just like in a five star hotels though this is a three star venue. The public beach is near by, everything is in a walking distance, restaurants, shopping, galleries, yaht peer. We were a group of six adults and we were extremely pleased with the service, English spoken and even Finnish (the lady of the house), in the middle of the night a cosy bar was opened for us as we wanted some limincello after the dinner outside. No swimming pool, nor gym - so probably not best for families with small children but excellent for adults.

Room Tip: second floor no 23, very silent and spacious

This centrally located hotel is on a quiet street with a park in back of it. We had two rooms, one of which had two windows and two fans, so there was great air circulation. The staff was very helpful. The breakfast, included in the reasonable price, was quite good with a wide variety of selections. It was a nice walk to the beaches or a short bus ride, if you wanted to go to the beaches nearer to Portofino. It was also near the business district with lots of shops and good restaurants. There was also a ping pong table and a lovely garden to enjoy as well. We would definitely stay here again!

Walking in I seriously felt like I had arrived at my grandmothers house after a long roadtrip. This hotel is so homey that you are ok with the fact that it is somewhat shabby and in need of some serious sprucing up. However, the hosts are the friendliest and most charming of any we had encountered on our vacation and this was ultimately why we loved it. Room was very spacious but, again, very dated. We had our two teenage daughters and had to get a second room for them. They could easily have fit in our room on rollouts that I spied in the hall and maybe we could have saved a little on the room cost. All in all, a good choice with loads of charm.
