“OMG: I love this hotel and town!”
Reviewed May 29, 2009

Ok. I hardly ever rave on review web sites. This hotel is worth raving about. Partly, it's because we stayed in such a dump in Rome, based on inflated reviews here on TripAdvisor, so we were primed for a nice hotel in Italy. But whatever. The Hotel Riviera is a perfect hotel, in -- in my opinion, having toured the area by car -- the best city in the Italian Riviera to call a base. We stayed here for a week. We visited the Cinque Terre (way too touristy - didn't see any Italians there), Genova (pretty, but just like a big city), and some of the other coastal towns other than Rapallo. Nothing was as charming as Rapallo, which is where actual Italians come to enjoy their vacations. It has a South Beach-like strip, with a cute boardwalk, and a clean (pay-by-the-day) beach, right across from the Hotel Riviera, as well as an adorable commercial district off the beach, where we found pretty good deals on cute beach wear, etc. I had great food, both at the hotel (pricey, but nice) and in town, including at a chinese restaurant on the strip. So about the hotel: it's a family run business, run by a father and son team, and has been in the same family since 1930. It shows, in a good way: the place is lovingly maintained and has a very comfortable feel. The room was fantastic, with 3 balconies on the fourth floor overlooking the ocean, a comfortable bed, nice finishings, and -- best of all, a real luxury in Italy -- a huge bathroom. The people who work here were uniformly helpful and friendly. Decent spreads for b-fast in the a.m. (for Italy, again; most people here apparently don't eat anything for b-fast except a small coffee and a pastry). In short, the hotel is a great value for the price, and, as others on here have noted, seems like it's a higher class of hotel than the 3 stars apparently attributed to it. I'm guessing it's lower on the scale because there is no room service or gym, which we would not have used in any event, given the fact that we're surrounded by great food and were exhausted at the end of each day from all the hiking we did in nearby coastal towns). Anyhow, I loved this hotel, and would definitely come back.

  • Liked — The room and the view, and the family-style service
  • Disliked — I had absolutely no complaints, which is a first for me

We had been travelling through Italy and stopped at the Hotel Riviera for a day/night prior to our U.K. flight from Genoa. Superb value for money - excellent position, clean room, great view and a SUPERB RESTAURANT. Hemingway stayed here a lifetime ago and the hotel is featured in one of his books 'Cat in The Rain'. The hotel also has one huge advantage over the competition - its gracious and accomodating host, Claudio. Thank you to you and your staff for making our last evening in Italy...wonderful. We shall return !!

We went to Liguria with the purpose of exploring Cinque Terre and then go on to Firenze. . From the reviews of this hotel, we honestly expected a little bit more. The location was excellent because it is in front of the sea, and the scenery is beautiful, and close to the center, breakast was good , out in the terrace, with nice service and parking also for our car............. but the room needs some improvement. The sconces, that served as night lights were falling down, the bed was not very confortable, and the overall decoration of the room needed a lot of help, very dated, it belonged to the 70's.

I could come back after a good make over..

We used Rapallo as a base for exploring the neighboring area. Having come from an exceptional hotel in Venice-Pensione Accademia- this hotel was a let down. Although rated 3 stars as well, it was much less than expected. The towels felt like American dishcloths; there were visible dust bunnies in the corners and the room itself had no style whatsoever just plain walls. In addition, the breakfast was paltry (in our opinion).

On the positive side, the location was very good although there were many other hotels nearby. The hotel was recommended by Frommer's so we went with it but would not recommend it.

Hotel Riviera is in a wonderful location; as close to the water as you can get. It had parking out front so we didn't have to walk far and it was free. The staff was lovely and made us feel very welcomed. The breakfast was wonderful and the dining area had a wonderful view of the water. Although the rooms were simple, they were spacious by European standards and very clean. I would stay there again.

We had the Hotel Riveria recommended to us by a friend who had stayed here, and after our week, we would definitely do the same for others.
It has the ideal location in the centre of Rapallo, right by the water and near all the shops and restaurants.
The rooms are excellent, impeccably clean, and the hotel restaurant is one of the best in town.
Without a doubt, the best aspect of our stay has been the staff. Everyone is friendly and extremely professional, and our special thanks go to the mamager and his family, who have always been ready with a warm greeting, and who are full of useful advice.

  • Liked — The service, especially the management
  • Disliked — Showers cold have been a bit more powerful!
