Ok. I hardly ever rave on review web sites. This hotel is worth raving about. Partly, it's because we stayed in such a dump in Rome, based on inflated reviews here on TripAdvisor, so we were primed for a nice hotel in Italy. But whatever. The Hotel Riviera is a perfect hotel, in -- in my opinion, having toured the area by car -- the best city in the Italian Riviera to call a base. We stayed here for a week. We visited the Cinque Terre (way too touristy - didn't see any Italians there), Genova (pretty, but just like a big city), and some of the other coastal towns other than Rapallo. Nothing was as charming as Rapallo, which is where actual Italians come to enjoy their vacations. It has a South Beach-like strip, with a cute boardwalk, and a clean (pay-by-the-day) beach, right across from the Hotel Riviera, as well as an adorable commercial district off the beach, where we found pretty good deals on cute beach wear, etc. I had great food, both at the hotel (pricey, but nice) and in town, including at a chinese restaurant on the strip. So about the hotel: it's a family run business, run by a father and son team, and has been in the same family since 1930. It shows, in a good way: the place is lovingly maintained and has a very comfortable feel. The room was fantastic, with 3 balconies on the fourth floor overlooking the ocean, a comfortable bed, nice finishings, and -- best of all, a real luxury in Italy -- a huge bathroom. The people who work here were uniformly helpful and friendly. Decent spreads for b-fast in the a.m. (for Italy, again; most people here apparently don't eat anything for b-fast except a small coffee and a pastry). In short, the hotel is a great value for the price, and, as others on here have noted, seems like it's a higher class of hotel than the 3 stars apparently attributed to it. I'm guessing it's lower on the scale because there is no room service or gym, which we would not have used in any event, given the fact that we're surrounded by great food and were exhausted at the end of each day from all the hiking we did in nearby coastal towns). Anyhow, I loved this hotel, and would definitely come back.
