My partner and I have just returned from a 3 night stay at the Excelsior Palace in Rapallo (Late April 2010), our second visit in two years.
Our first visit to the hotel was a one night stop-over booked through Expedia. Prices are advertised on Expedia, and elsewhere, as room-only with an extra 50€ payable for breakfast and more € again for access to the 'Beach Club'. However, on our second visit to the hotel we booked directly with the hotel and received a detailed email to include a price for room, breakfast and access to the beach club. Having read previous reviews I wonder if the hotel has changed its policy with regards to extra costs for access to the Beach Club or whether these charges are only enforced in high season.
Either way I would suggest that visitors contact and book with the hotel directly for clarity.
My partner and I are both in the Hotel/Tourism industry in the French Alpes and find this hotel a perfect setting to unwind after the winter. The hotel is peaceful, we were under the impression that it was not very busy at all. However sneaking a look at the breakfast list revealed that 20-30 rooms were listed as present for breakfast.
The breakfast is of a very high quality offering everything you would want for breakfast, as well as perhaps a few things you wouldn't. 5 stars.
Service in the hotel is impeccable as you would expect from a 5 star hotel - but the staff here genuinely invest themselves in your satisfaction. Simone, the yachting bar tender, is a very nice chap and good company for an aperitif with plenty of suggestions for day-trips as well as interesting local alcohol.
We hired a scooter (125c) for an afternoon and zipped down to portofino, notoriously bad for parking a car, and had a really enjoyable journey, visit and shop. The Vespa scooters are 80€ for 5 hours to include all insurance, fuel and helmets.
The beach club offers an indoor pool with views overlooking the harbour, an outdoor infinity-style pool with views of the coast and sea, a small gym, solarium, jacuzzi, sauna etc, sports bar, plenty of tanning areas 'terraced' down to the sea. All very clean, modern and comfortable - well worth a few extra euros if not included in the room price!
We booked a classic double room during our first visit and a superior double for the second, three night stay, and to be completely honest we could not tell the difference between classic and superior in size or feature. The rooms are slightly old fashioned but comfortable and obviously finished to a high original specification. Bathrooms are nice too if not a little tight for space.
The views of the coast towards Portofino and also to the east are beautiful and can be enjoyed from seating on the superior room balcony (no seats on the classic room balcony is the only really noticeable difference).
We didn't eat in the hotel restaurant but can recommend 'Marios' fish restaurant in Rapallo.
In summary, a very nice hotel with excellent staff, facilities and atmosphere. Ideally located with great views from comfortable rooms. Oh and they have Simone in the bar to make you laugh too!
We are planning to return soon - to try a Junior Suite!
