“3 not 4 stars”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2010

Hotel Nazionale is very well located. The guy at the reception, Peter, is pleasant and well-coming and speaks several languages. We had a standard matrimonial on the first floor. The room itself is spacious and has a terrace. The airco is perfect and the beds are good. The bathroom is small and the showerplace somehow narrow. Internet access is very of charge. The room has features of a 4-star but there is no coherence. The tv is very small and not flatscreen. Teh breakfast is a little poorish. Only breads, jam and 1 yoghurt + orange juice out of a pack. There is no buffet-breakfast. So if u stay more than i nite rather boaring. During the 4 nites we stayed the sheets werenot refreshed 1 single time. The corridors r noisy. So, to resume. Not a bad experience at all, but I would rate it a 3 star and for 200 euros overpriced. (as everything in Portfino).

If you must stay in Portofino as opposed to perhaps nearby Santa Margherita and can't afford the Hotel Spendido (like most of us mortals) this is your hotel. Ask for a room with a balcony and view. For 300 Euros in this location the value is unbeatable. Don't expect the Ritz. The room we had (room 15) was huge with two windows almost floor to ceiling looking right out at the Harbor. The room was no frills but the bathroom was modern. The only negative was the management smoked in the lobby but it seemed like everyone in Portofino smokes especially at the outdoor restaurants. If you can, stay at the Hotel Spendido or Hotel Spendido Mare. If 300 euros is above budget, stay in Santa Margherita and do a day visit by boat to Portofino.

Although I think next time I come to the Portofino Area I would stay in Santa Margherita (is livier than Portofino) we had a good experience in hotel Nazionale. It has a super location, neat rooms and fine breakfast.

I have been 4 night in Hotel Nazionale and I have to say that it is a perfect deal.
The hotel is quite small and it makes you feel comfortable; the personnel is absolutely friendly and the owner Nicola is a delicious man. The Pizzeria attached to the hotel offers great meals for a very good price. The rooms are very spacious and absolutely well mantained.
I suggest everybody who is planning to go to Portofino to stay at Nazionale: and enjoy this beautiful experience!

My wife and I returned this June to Portofino for our anniversary (23rd) to the Hotel Nazionale, where we stayed in 1983. It is now much smaller, though it is still the only place to stay (other than the Splendido's annex) directly on the beautiful harbor. Opening the French doors onto a small balcony overlooking the harbor every morning was an amazing way to start the day. The staff was very friendly, breakfast was terrific, and the price was reasonable considering the location. We look forward to returning.

I have stayed in the Nazionale twice, and in both cases it was a long time ago, so be forewarned, much changes. But much does not.

The first time I was here with my kids. We pulled into Portofino without a reservation in the summer, and amazingly the Splendido had rooms. I'm used to Relais and Chateaux and Leading Hotels as my venues of choice abroad, so I thought "great". Then I found out what two rooms would cost at the Splendido and headed down to the port, where I parked and found the Nazionale. Like all hotels in Italy its rooms were relatively expensive compared to France. The kids' proposed room was hot, small and charmless. I thought "this is a bummer." My room was also hot and seemingly charmless, until the porter walked up a small staircase and out a window onto a huge roof terrace with an incredible view overlooking the port. I booked instantly. Overnight the bed was saggy, the air conditioning near useless, but in the morning we went out on that terrace and ate a breakfast that included huge glasses of fresh-squeezed blood orange juice. It was a worthwhile experience.

It must have been ten years later that I went back, this time with a reservation. The place had been redone. The rooms were clean, modern and efficient, the air conditioning worked, and the bed was fine. Breakfast was in the breakfast room on the main floor. I had a window view over the harbor but no terrace. I was unhappy.

The moral, I guess, is that this was a better place when it was a charming dump rather than a mini Embassy Suites with a breakfast room. And I wouldn't go to Portofino again unless I could afford the Splendido.
