“Beautiful position and great room looking out to the bay”
Reviewed September 16, 2012

Stayed for two nights and wished it could have been longer! Portofino is a delightful small bay with fishing boats moored alongside ocean going luxury yachts. Quite a sight to behold. The management and staff were very helpful and friendly in spite of our total lack of the Italian language! Our room was quite delightful with a spiral staircase leading up to the main bedroom. Both our upper and lower rooms had balconies from which one could view the bay. Lovely feature is the pathway from the hotel to the village, as well as the hotels own private little beach with tiered seating and sunbathing facilities. Quite special.

Room Tip: Sea facing preferably with a balcony. Makes all the difference!

The location of Domina Home Piccolo is the best feature of this hotel. Right outside of Portofino harbor, there is a pedestrian walkway accessible from the second floor of the hotel (back entrance) that leads right into town. We were told it was a 10 minute walk, but if you are a fast walker you can be in town in less time than that. It made going to the harbor for lunch, dinner, wine, etc. very convenient. Also, there is a bus stop right outside the hotel that will take you to SML, Rapallo, etc.

Our room was lovely, and had a private balcony off of it that overlooked the water. Very nice for enjoying a glass of wine in the evenings. The hotel staff was very helpful and accommodating, and nice enough to bring us a bottle of champagne to celebrate our honeymoon.

The private beach across from the hotel is actually open to the public, and can get a bit crowded during the day. We preferred to go to SML and rent chairs on the beach there, but the terraced sitting area across from the hotel is nice if you just want to get some sun.
Overall, a great stay in Portofino.

This is my second review on Domina Home, as I have returned again this summer and found the same relaxing and so friendly athmosphere. This time me and my friend had a superiour room with a sea view and the biggest bed I have ever seen in a hotel. Perfectly clean and maintained. The private beach was a bit crowded as we went in very high season, but in the morning there were only few people and to start your day with a swim in the sea felt so good. Lunch served at the beach was great. Staff always super helpful.
I read some of the previous reviews about the prices and have to say that if you have a tight budget, better don't go to Portofino at all. This hotel is actually cheap (especially the food) compared to the other places to stay and eat in this village and is the only one with a beach.

We spent three days at the Domino Home Piccolo and this was a "nice" experience.  On arrival we parked our huge X5 in the tiny space just past the hotel and were quickly acknowledge by a dark haired gentleman in his early fifties.   "Can I help you?"  He scowled in a serious and intimidating fashion. As though we should not have been there.
Fortunately we had our paperwork prepared which he took and then offered to remove our cases and immediately park our car in the towns multi story car park.  The reason for mentioning this is that after a four hour drive from Lake Como we were not completely organised and to lose the car without gathering all personal effects you  require could be a tad awkward. We suggest you  stop about 5km  before arriving at the hotel, because the roads become very narrow and challenging with limited stopping places. This will allow you to prepare yourself for a very swift Hand over and reduce the associated stress. Have your pass ports available too.  You may want to grab some bottles of water as well. It will soon become obvious why.

The hotel parking is cheaper than the price individuals pay. €18 v €21 per day and the hotel staff are used to parking there in their own allocated spaces
The hotel is just as the images portray it on their website, perfect location just away from the hub-bub of stunning Portofino but an easy, pleasant and safe walk away.  It's beautiful little cove just across the road with crystal clear sea water warm enough in August just to step straight into without a grimace.  Our room had two windows on the second floor overlooking the sea and the cove which the view extends to the natural harbour entrance.  There is a host of activity here to observe with fishing boats, sailing craft and of course the luxurious super yachts which appear to change daily
The room was comfortable, bed a bit firm for me and a feather topper would have been a nice addition.  But it was only for three nights. But on that point I would have to score down as it did not meet my expectation of "luxury"  the bed had a cover over the sheet, not a duvet more of a bed spread. There were a few marks on this.  I could not see a supply of these on the chamber maids trolly so if they are unchanged between guests this would be disappointing.

We asked reception, using the room telephone,  if there was an information book available. The Manager advised us the hotel did not give one as they preferred to communicate with the guests. Then curtly ended the conversation by hanging  up.

Reading lamps were non directional and fixed in a position  I found it difficult to read.
The flooring is a type of woven vinyl, flat, quite attractive but not carpet. So not luxury either, Very small LG tv by the bedside difficult to see from the sofa.  There is a mini bar but no tea or coffee making facilities. We do enjoy a cup of PG decaffeinated tea. Which room service can not provide.   The rooms have a safe in the wardrobe which is quite simple to set. However, both ours and our travelling companions in another room experienced being unable to open them with our possessions inside them.   The disturbing part of this was that within five minutes of explaining our plight to reception a chap we had not seen before  arrived at our door and  tapped in a few numbers he had memorised and the door sprang open in less than 5 seconds  Mmmm. Safe???

Bathroom No bathrobes or bath for that but good size shower, not a lot of room to put anything by the hand basin. But the black marble made it look nice .

The sofa showed signs of wear as did the cushions which is sad as they looked fairly new, so a question about the quality must be asked.

Breakfast was included and was taken on the ground floor in their restaurant.  This was very good as were the staff who served it.

There is a laptop in the reading room adjacent to reception guests can use. We used it to print our airline boarding cards by emailing them tom the hotels email address as no printer is attached.  There was good wifi in the rooms with  sufficient bandwidth  to watch YouTube

All in all the hotel was ok, with good Air Con,   We could not see  a bar, i would class is a 3 Star, front desk staff in the main helpful but lacking that good old fashioned charming friendly hospitality.   The Manager, whilst uber efficient,  was not seen to smile once! Perhaps he had his own problems. But in my company my staff have to smile sincerely at all our clients and leave any personal  problems they might have.... outside the door.  I think his demeanour to some degree percolates over his staff.

Room Tip: Choose a Seaview but first decide if the premium is worth it.

We had planned to stay a week at Domina but curtailed our stay to 2 nights. Hotel is very expensive for what you get and of course all you are really paying for is the fact that it is in Portofino. Room had a sea view, no balcony and was on small side at Euros 400 per night! Air con rattled and shower cubicle leaked. We went down the coast to Rappallo and paid half the price for a 4 star hotel and got a junior suite, x2 balconies and opposite the beach. 4* treatment, bed turned down and chocolate on pillow and shutters rolled down. Domina could learn a lesson from less pretentious hotels.

This was our third stop on our family vacation. The hotel is very nice. The rooms were small, and the TV was a computer screen. We learned rather quickly that Portofino is very expensive. The hotel was not cheap either. The restaurants at the Marina were all overpriced. The staff was very helpful, and eager to please, from the front desk, to the waiters in their restaurant. Breakfast was fine.

We were very plesently surprised when we arrived at the hotel, how nice and helpful everybody was. Very often you will find in Italy, that the staff has an attitude, which was not the case at all. The room with a seperate small room for our son was clean and we enjoyed the modern minimalism. The bathroom was a little small but nice. The view of the harbour was very beautiful and we also enjoyed our daily swim in the cristal clear water. The breakfast was ok, the two things which bothered us the most, were that if you arrived around 9.00am some of the items were already gone and the fact, that they served single wrapped processed cheese (in a country which is famous for its nice selection of cheese) was not aceptable for a hotel like that. We very much enjoyed the location and walked every evening to the village for dinner which is less than 10 minutes away from the hotel.
