Portofino has a lot of hotels and many with beautiful views of the Mediterranean. But the Hotel Splendido is unique in its service and atmosphere. It feels like a hotel from the olden days where guests are part of the community. The service is discreet and efficient. The lunches and dinners are wonderful. Have a drink at the bar after dinner and you'll enjoy some live piano music and singing. Guests join in on the singing. The rooms are spacious and quiet. There is a tennis court on the property. The shuttle runs every 20 minutes or so to the village of Porfofino when we were there (October). Some of the best views are from the pool side.

Room Tip: Ask for a room closer to the sea vs the tennis court. You'll have a better view from that side...

Went on our honeymoon and the staff was fantastic! We got an upgrade to the junior suite... The views everywhere you look are unbelievable. The rooms restaurants and hotel as a whole are perfection. The hiking trail to Santa Margharita is pretty cool too!

My husband and I spent one night in the Splendido Mare Hotel. We picked the Mare because we prefer the boutique hotel experience and this did not disappoint. We started off to a slightly rocky start with the lack of help with our luggage and the check-in process but the experience was only positive from there on! We were given an upgrade to a balcony room overlooking the harbor. The room lacked nothing! The room temperature was perfect and self regulating-a rarity in Europe! The bathroom had every amenity possible. The water pressure, make-up mirror, extra storage and wonderful products were superb. The attention to detail sets this hotel apart. We enjoyed the piano bar and gorgeous views. We loved the hiking and overall experience of the area. We hope to go back and spend more time! Truly a delight!

Room Tip: We loved our room overlooking the harbor with a balcony! We had proseco on the balcony watching the...

Dear Traveller,

First of all let me thank you for taking time and trouble to share your comments with the TA community. It is through all suggestions of our Guests, no matter whether positive or negative, that we can improve our service and facilities.

I am really very sorry for the inconvenience you have experienced with the valet service upon arrival. It's quite difficoult to explain what could have happened since I do not know your date / arrival time, we have a dedicated service for all Guests staying at the Mare from 10:00 AM till 10:00 PM. Morover there's a phone at the entrance of the Garage on the right side that can be used by our Guests to call the Reception.

Of course it can happen that the Valet is not there being, of course I guess, busy with some other Guests. Anyhow I perfectly understand your disappointment but since it did happen I can only ask you to accept my sicere apologies.

Also I am very pleased to hear this event has not spoilt your stay and that everything has been arranged accordingly to your wishes.

I really hope to welcoming you back soon and of course at your entire disposal for any question you may have.

Best regards from Portofino,

Careful when you book. They will not refund your deposit for ANY reason! This was booked in March, 2013. We were to arrive for 1 night on May 5, 2013. We tried to cancel because we found a cheaper rate, but they would not honor the lower rate. We stayed in Camogli (8 miles away) and tried to battle this with American Express, but they couldn't help us. We lost $855. for 1 night at this Hotel. We had been there before, but we will never return.

Dear Traveller,

First of all let me thank you for having shared your comments with the TA community. Concerning the reservation, the accommodation was booked through a Travel Agency at the special discounted rate ''Super Saver'' (off 30% on our rack rate). This is a promotion, that includes special amenities in addition but, as clearly stated in the offer, to secure the booking we require a NON refundable deposit, in case of cancellations.
We sent a confirmation to the Agency on March 8th and the booking has been confirmed as well as the deposit and cancellation policy.
Therefore we are perfectly in line with this reservation.
I will be happy to assist you anytime if you have any additional question.
Always at your disposal, I remain,

With my very best regards,

My wife and I recently spent 3 nights at the Splendido celebrating a big birthday. She had always wanted to visit Portofino and since last year when she briefly saw the hotel from a distance, decided she wanted it to be at the Splendido specifically rather than anywhere else in Portofino. Well, we were not disappointed at all. Everything, from the very start to the moment of departure was faultless. In fact, in many regards our expectations were exceeded. Hotel restaurants are often best to give a miss but not at the Splendido. Breakfasts and dinners were first class with a fine selection and great care taken with preparation. The wine list was superb. Staff were super friendly and efficient and you're always called by your name, wherever you happen to be in the hotel. There's a family atmosphere to the hotel and everyone is simply very friendly. The walk from the hotel along a little path to Portofino is stunning and well worth the effort rather than taking the shuttle that makes frequent trips. The piano bar was also a favourite at night with great music and entertainment. This is certainly one hotel that we will visit again. About half of the guests that we met during our stay were returning guests. Enough said. Spoil yourself.

As established fans of Orient Express Hotels, we had high hopes of this hotel and I'm pleased to say that we were not disappointed. Portofino is a truly beautiful picture-postcard place, just 40 minutes by road from Genoa Airport. The coastline is stunning and this hotel sits in a commanding position above the resort, looking far out to sea at the same time. The hotel building is adorned with the most beautiful flowers, with an inviting terrace restaurant and bar overlooking the pool area - which is surprisingly large and exceptionally attractive. The pool is filled with warm sea water, which makes a pleasant change. There are numerous places to sit and relax both around the pool and in quieter spots around the extensive gardens.

We booked a Deluxe Junior Suite with balcony and sea view. Our room was very recently refurbished and jaw-droppingly beautiful and so well appointed. The nights were completely peaceful and quiet. The standard of Housekeeping was exceptional throughout our stay. The Reception and Concierge staff were both very professional, but firendly and approachable at the same time. The breakfast was first-class and the Restaurant staff were outstanding, in particular. The shuttle service into Portofino was excellent and ran throughout the day. That said, it is a very pleasant 15 minute walk into the village - which is perfect for an evening stroll both before and after dinner. Portofino boasts a number of excellent restaurants - well worth exploring!
We spent the first part of our holiday at The Grand Hotel Timeo in Taormina, Sicily - another Orient Express property. These two hotels were a perfect combination - in short, we had one of our very best and most memorable holidays ever. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the room rates at this hotel are eye-wateringly high, but then this is reflected in the standard of accommodation. We have every intention of repeating the entire experience again next year!

Room Tip: The Deluxe Junior Suites on the top floor of the hotel are a complete delight. The sea view is a mu...

Visited around two weeks ago and it was a fantastic experience altogether. The staff were fully attentive to our needs at all times. Commuting between the two hotels was available. The food downstairs in the bar was magnificent for dinner. I recommend you try the seafood. After dinner there was piano playing and singing of typical Italian ballades. Truly a great experience and highly recommended
