“Stunning views, great welcome, well worth the detour!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 30, 2012 via mobile

A mini adventure from start to finish - a mere 12 kms from the sea yet a complete change of scenery...

At 450m altitude (although you'd swear it was higher!) this B&B is the perfect place to unwind.

First up - getting there! It's a short drive but a winding and narrow steep road (very little traffic so not an issue) leading to a dusty track - GPS may not list the track - and back onto tarmac to get to the farmhouse but follow the strightforward instructions and you'll be there in no time!

Baggage and road weary guests can be taxied up in the 4*4 but for those of you up for a challenge the 170-odd steps are quickly put behind you (we packed an overnight bag for our short stay to take up, instead of carting the whole shebang up and down...) and the breathtaking views and warm welcome more than compensate for the effort!

The rooms are comfortable and clean with great views, plenty of cupboard of space, and after the hustle and noise of the coast, the calm and quiet is perfect. While there is no aircon it wasn't needed as the room was cool enough after sundown. A fan might be useful nevertheless should the nights get much warmer.

Local restaurants - we walked back down the steps and to the local Michelin guide recommended restaurant 2kms down the hill. La Brinca is absolutely phenomenal value at €40 per head for a 4 course local speciality meal with white and red wine, water, coffee and digestif included - highly recommended! Admittedly the walk back up the hill and the 170 steps were more difficult but easily manageable - fireflies accompanying you all the way back made for an enchanting walk.

Breakfast on the terrace overlooking the valley in the late morning with local fruit was a great finish to a short but highly enjoyable stay.

In summary - off the main track but well worth the detour for a relaxing countryside break.

Our grown kids and all stayed here previously and were enthralled by Castagnola64. Their reviews were modest compared to our experience. Lu and Leo greeted us with great hospitality and were helpful in our every exploration of northern Italy. We easily day-tripped Cinque terre and the San Sebastian areas from here. The road up is not for the faint-hearted, but the directions were clear and it was the most beautiful and exhilarating driving that I have ever experienced. Once perched atop Castognola64 the rooms are clean, neat and well-connected to the beautiful environment(no phone or TV, although wifi is available). Breakfasts outdoors on the patio looking down, down, down across miles of vineyards were full of locally-grown products and deliciously-prepared. Lovely, majestic, warm and charming are adjectives that somewhat capture Castagnola64. And don't miss a trip down the road to an equally charming restaurant, LaBrinka! Thank you Lu and Leo!

Wonderful place, lovely people and fantastic views! Thank you so much Lu and Leo for your kindness. We really had a relaxing weekend out of Milan, just enjoying the quietness of your place, the beauty of the nature and your hospitality.
We will definitely come back with the children next time!

A beautiful B&B with friendly hosts. Once up the narrow & twisty road (I really do mean ultra twisty & ultra narrow, and do follow the instructions carefully) you will be in a isolated county environment. Great place to see all that Laguria has to offer. Thanks to Lu & leo, from Wayne & family

A drive up twisty narrow roads rewarded us with a gorgeous comfy room, an amazing view off the terrace, and the warm hospitality of the proprietors Lu and Leo. After a long long day of international travel, what a treat to have a delicious home cooked meal and sink into a cozy bed in a room with a view of the olive groves and vineyards in the valley below. It was easy to access Cinque terre and Portofino from Castagnola 64 for day trips. This B and B is a great value folks!

What a welcome you will get here. It's a bit out of the way, but worth the effort. Your hosts Lu and Leo will make sure that you have a fantastic time 'on the hill'.
