This black-and-white-striped Gothic-Romanesque cathedral is absolutely beautiful and well worth a visit.

“the exterior is better than the interior”
Reviewed April 29, 2013

worth visiting, the interior is very interesting, I liked the colonnade. the paintings are not outstanding, there is better art in other genoese churches. What is really impressive is the exterior, breathtaking

“Genoa's cathedral, genoaises' proud”
Reviewed March 6, 2013

Typical Genoa's colour, white marble and grey stone horizontal strips, asymmetrical towers, impressive inside, showing power and pride of the Geona's republic; have also a look at the WW2 ship grenade that hit the church and luckily did not explode - otherwise what we could see now could be only a reconstruction...

It is a 381mm caliber, shot on feb 9, 1941 perhaps by HMS Malaya or HMS Renown.

And of course rememeber it is a monument but first of all it is a Church !

“Great News!”
Reviewed January 29, 2013

I have reviewed this church twice before in some detail, because I think it’s one of several beautiful churches in Genova, but its museum is really my favorite church museum in the city. Thus I’m pleased to let readers know the great news for visitors to the lovely San Lorenzo church museum; they have improved and rewritten their English language information and added pictures of the described items, so it makes for a wonderful visit. The previous version, read like a “google translate” version of English; it just didn’t flow and was pretty incomprehensible, but the new version is excellent and really brings much to the experience. This is a very small church museum, but the treasures are amazing and the museum very atmospheric. Highly recommended! It's closed on Monday, otherwise opened 9-12 and 3-6. The church opens an hour earlier but is closed over lunch, as so many sites in Genova. A visit to the church is free, the museum is 5 euros.

As in my previous review, I encourage you to carefully look at the facade outside of the church and notice that the Genovese were excellent recyclers … many of the stones are from other buildings and have random decorations on them, especially on the sides of the church. Also can you find, at about eye level by the right door a hidden marble dog? The story goes that one of the builders always brought his dog to the building site but close to the end of construction his dog died. He was dreadfully sad, so he decided to incorporate his dog’s sculpture in stone and hide it as a decoration. Good luck finding the dog!(see picture) Enjoy the church and your time in Genova!

This cathedral has a dense Genova architecture, painting with a black strips in the outside and inside. The interior is beautiful an classy, no wonder Nicole Kidman decided to put this cathedral on her Genova trip list :)
