Owner description: The Acquario di Genova was built on the occasion of the Expo ’92, a celebration of the fifth centenary of the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus, with the intention of restructuring and enhancing an area full of history and traditions, located in the heart of Genoa’s historic centre, the Porto Antico (the old port). It’s the biggest aquarium in Europe.

Every city that we travel to, we look to see if there is an aquarium, and visit it. Genoa was no exception. It is situated near the bus, train and ferry stations - not dissimilar to Darling Harbour in Sydney. It is very modern, and the building has been superbly laid out, and has taken full advantage of multi-levels and full glass to show some of the creatures at all angles - fascinating to see them diving below and swimming above!
There are many exhibits which specialise in fish from the particular region - and this makes it a unique experience, because whilst there are some that you will have seen before, there are many that you will not.
You can happily spend the day there, making it extremely good value for money. In addition, right along side of it, is the actual galleon used in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies - a marvel to behold. It is quite breathtaking to see the actual size, and you almost expect Johnny Depp to come rushing around the corner!!
So, if you are in Genoa - a very under-rated city, visit the aquarium and you will definitely not be disappointed.

Old or young you just have to pay a visit the next time you are in the area. It was our first visit and we are very glad that we chose to visit, it was simply wonderful viewing all kinds of fish, shark's, seals and of course Penguins (my favourites). Strolling through the corridors viewing all these wonderful creatures is quite simply a magical experience, yes you have the usual gift shop, but who cares because you are not duty bound to purchase anything, however some gifts are so cute it is hard to resist. All and all it is a real experience a truly must visit if you happen to be in the area.

You'll need a full day to explore every corner of this well thought-out, well-stocked and fascinating aquarium. Fun for all ages.

I've been to the aquarium many times and it's always a surprising and beautiful experience. Best avoid the week-end (I realize if difficult if you come from outside Genoa but it'd be good to consider a visit during a day off) in order to enjoy it quietly. The new dolphinarium is really amazing: it still needs a final touch but it's already a beautiful improvement.

The Genoa Aquarium is a nice experience for those who have never visited an aquarium. It is well organized, has many types of fish and provides good entertainment for 1:30h. However, the price is quite high when compared with other Aquariums in other european cities, and the discount with the Genova Card Musei is minimal.
