“A Fabulous Upgrade!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2010

We originally booked The Hotel Continental only to find when we got there that it was closed....and we were given a free upgrade to the 5 star sister hotel The Grand Hotel Savoia which is next door.Yipee!!....our first ever upgrade!
The GHS is a very elegant hotel - couldn't understand the negative review on here....we found the staff very pleasant and helpful....,the breakfast room setting with the stunning panorama was truly spectacular...including the hot tub on the terrace balcony!....and the breakfast itself was a really good spread.
It's very close to the Principe railway station...so no taxi fare needed.
We found Genoa to be a very interesing and pleasant port...we did the boat trip round the harbour enjoyed the Piazzas...found Maro Polo's prison and went up on the elevator to Castello for the wonderful views over Genoa.
Genoa provided a very nice short stopover on our way to the Cinque Terre...and the Grand Hotel Savoia was a memorable experience.

Stayed 5 nights. Easy to get everywhere on foot. Economical option compared to luxury sister hotel next door. Very good breakfast, our room was quite large and roomy, along with large bathroom. Faced to the side, not front. Despite busy location, surprisingly quiet. Turn-of-the-century charm, with funky historic elevator.
Major criticism: poor housekeeping; had to ask for a replacement shower curtain (our first one had black mold all over it), bedspread was stained, floors were worn and scrappy looking, small terrace off the room had lots of cigarette butts, curtains were falling off bath window, and in bedroom, had cigarette burns. All of these issues should not have been the case had housekeeping been well supervised.
Front desk staff very helpful, PC in lobby for quick on-line needs.

This hotel is comfortable, attractive, efficient, friendly, and situated well for train trips and exploring the city and coast.
I feel that they have put in a lot of effort to see things from the guest's perspective, and it was a real pleasure to stay here.
My only niggle was that in a delightful, 19th century styled breakfast room, generous with scrumptious breakfast possibilities, they played some irritating techno-ish / nasal pop rubbish. This definitely interfered with the lovely calmness of the place, so could I suggest either peace and quiet, or a bit of inoffensive tinkling piano sounds?

After much internet study we selected this Hotel due to the proximity to the main Railway Station. This was indeed the case and was very helpful. It also looked very nice and had pretty good traveller ratings.
The Hotel Continental and Hotel Grand Savoia (which are situated next door to each other) are owned by the same company. The Hotel Continental does not have the same facilities/nor the same beautiful rooms and entrance areas as the Hotel Savoia. In addition one finds that if they pay and extra 35 euros that the Savoia facilities can be used. (even though this is not mentioned on the Hotel website or on hotel check in)
The Hotel Continental does not have a pool, gym or spa.

The staff were very gracious and helpful but it took 3 tries to get an appropriate room. The first room we were given was a smoking room despite asking for non smoking: In the second room the air conditioner was broken and despite calling for assistance none was forthcoming. The third room was very nice but by the time we were settled we were exhausted from moving our bags and cases around the Hotel from floor to floor in the small antique lift.
In conclusion though-on the up side- the breakfast in the morning was first class even despite the non air conditioned breakfast area. Most of the pictures on the Hotels dedicated webite are of the breakfast area.

The Hotel Continental is in a great location opposite the train station, we flew from Rome and caught a taxi from the airport. There is a special deal with the taxis that for 7euro per person they will drop you at the train station, you must ask for this before you get in the taxi. We arrived at 10.00am and our room was not ready, they stored our bags and we walked around the local area to get our bearings. Checkin was simple and the staff were very friendly. I had been expecting a tiny room, based on other revies for Italy, but was pleasantly surprised, the room (534) is spacious and looks to have been recently updated. The room could have been a bit cleaner but was quite OK. Being on the 5th floor, the view is quite nice. Being near the train and bus station it could have been noisy but there are electric shutters on the windows that block almost all the outside noise and the light making it very dark and good for sleeping. They offer free wireless internet and our package included breakfast which is of a good standard. All in all a very good hotel and I would recommend.

This is very nice hotel with its unique charm. The hotel has very nice old-fashioned lift. Our room was large with additional small sofa. Breakfast is varied and the breakfast room is very comfortable. There is a 5 star hotel next door and we had dinner their. The hotel has its own parking not far from the hotel by price 20 euro per day.

great location only 100m from train station. If you don't like lifts this hotel has one of the old cage style ones. Upgraded to a larger room. Free wifi in room. Breakfast included was nice. Room was clean, quiet, roomy, comfortable but nothing special.
