Hotel Brignole
Ranked #32 of 91 Hotels in Genoa
Reviewed November 10, 2012

We chose this hotel based on reviews, but we were very very disappointed. The location is good (less than 5 minutes from the Genova Brignole railway station), our room was pretty big and clean, but the hotel is definitely not for cold season and is NOT worth it for what they offer. Meaning, we stayed there at the end of October and they did not start the heating system. Besides that, it was windy (“You know, Genoa is a windy place”, one receptionist told us) and the blinds and windows banged all night long, preventing us to sleep. We dared to complain about the noise made by the blinds and windows, and we were treated like crazy people. I quote the eldest receptionist on duty that night: “And only for this you made me climb the stairs (we were at second floor and they don’t have an elevator!)?” For this, meaning the fact that we could not sleep because of the noise. We asked for another room and we got another “nice” answer from him: “No way!” I asked if there is no other available room in the whole hotel, but he was very determined and started to scream at us. We were the ones to calm him down to prevent him waking up the other guests. In the end we gave up and send him away, telling him that we will write bad reviews about this hotel. He laughed into our faces saying that they don’t give a damn about the reviews. Meaning, who write or read these reviews don’t matter anyway, as long as they come to this hotel and pay a lot to get almost nothing in return. Those suckers are me and you, who are reading now this review.

We complained the next morning again, to another receptionist and all he could tell us was “I am afraid there is no solution for your problem.” Meaning no possibility to change the room. Why? Because we were already the suckers to pay so, why bother. We complain further, about the draining from the shower and for that was a solution, but they did not bother to solve it either. The customers don’t count anymore after they checked-in and paid for the room.

As for the rest…we asked for double bed and instead we got two beds linked together, covered with a very awkward bed sheet, with plastic on one side, very uncomfortable and noisy on any move. Probably the owner believed he is running a day care center and the guests will gonna wet their beds in their sleep. It was awful and I had to take it off every night. It made me feel like playing skandenberg with the cleaning lady.

Don’t let yourself fooled by the photos. The floor is not wooden but tiled and it is very cold during the winter. So, take some sleepers with you.

As for the walls…they seem to be made from carton; you hear absolutely EVERYTHING. Not only the doors banged on the hall, but also the TV, shower or toilet noise, the discussions or laughter of your neighbors. If they want to go to sleep 1 am, so will you. If they want to wake up at 5 am, so will you. If you want to watch TV, you can’t. If you increase the sound so you can hear something, you will disturb your neighbors; if you decrease it to normal, you will hear nothing. Besides many of the TV Italian channels did not work. TV was more like for decoration.

Breakfast was lame and of bad quality. Every day we found old croissants mixed among the fresh ones, the bread was old, the sweet cakes were way too sweet and stuck to your teeth, the juice is anything you can imagine but orange or tangerine juice, and even they say you can have breakfast until 10:30, after 9:00 you could not find anything to eat.

Don’t count on the internet (in your room or dining room). It is VERY slow and take ages until you can open a simple page or read your email.

If you are in a business trip for few days, find another hotel. If you go to Genoa for a leisure trip, don’t spoil your vacation and try to find a better hotel.

Room Tip: ask for a room NOT facing the main street!

I stayed for one night on my business trip and stayed in single room. Hotel was very near to brignole station, that was the reason why I choose it together with the price. I think the price and quality were really good. Room wasn't big but very clean and breakfast was good. Also the staff was very helpful they even ordered me a pizza as I was really tired and needed a dinner.

Upon my arrival, Favio the manager, was extremely helpful! The property does not have a lift, but the staff was right there to help me out, not only with luggage but with sights to see, maps, recommendations on restaurants, the Harley Shop.....and so much more! I met a mother and daughter from Buenos Aires staying at the hotel, extended my stay for 3 nights, and we took in the Italian Riveria, including Cinque Terra!!! The location is perfect for rail travel day trips! Literally steps away from Stazione Genova Brignole! The only down side would be that everything in the "old town" closes up by 7pm, but the port is only 15 minutes walk away. Carlo was a real joy and a huge help as well! The breakfast is standard "Italian style", which I have no complaints! The rooms were very clean, air was frigid, and minibar inexpensive!

Room Tip: I stayed in room 1.....nothing of a view but quite comfortable and a nice size!

i dont understand how can such a place still have 3 starts. maybe when they opened 50 years ago, it was a real 3 stars. nothing has been changed since then. my room was reasonably clean, but even hostels are very clean nowadays in italy. toilet was i step above the room, a deep step. very old and full of mud. breakfast, no comment. discount cold meat, and croissants that were not crunchy at all. Room rate, same as some very nice 2 or 3 star hotel. not to mention the 20 deep steps up to get to the reception, and more steps to go up to the rooms. if u are at the top floor, expect 4 floors of steps, as there is no elevator. Only good thing is that is just around the corner from Brignole Train station. definitely not recommended.
