“cozy and comfortable”
Reviewed March 7, 2013

our hotel arranged for a table here when our first choice was too busy. the lonely planet guide had it listed as $$$ and we wanted something simple and not too cher, but this turned out to be pretty delightful, and not expensive, either. we had all the local specialities, pasta in hazlenut sauce, squid stew, pesto- all delicious. service was friendly and very helpful in explaining the dishes. my husband remarked that even though we were in a rather small dining room and it was very full, there was a lovely calm about the place. i wish we'd had more time to explore the neighborhood before the shops closed. it really looked interesting.

“Friendly & Tasty”
Reviewed November 22, 2012

Our family sought out this wonderful place in the heart of medieval Genoa for lunch. We ate in the garden amongst other Italian families with children. They have toys to help entertain while the parents dine, which certainly kept our 1 1/2 year old occupied. Our waitress, also the owner?, was incredibly friendly. We started with pasta and had a fish and meat main course. Each was served with a fresh salad. We left happy and would absolutely recommend this restaurant when visiting Genoa.

“Fantastic Location”
Reviewed July 28, 2012

In the centre of Genoa in a small shaded square is this fine restaurant. The evening we ate here was "Bloom Day" and a small group were reading from james Joyce Ulysses to a small audience. just added to the atmosphere

“Amazing journey! Amazing food!”
Reviewed March 24, 2012

Hidden inside the historical center of Genoa there's a small piazza where you can experience the city atmosphere in a bite! This place is great! The food is an interpretation of the ligurian tradition, starters as vegetable cakes, pastas and tasty main courses: fish and meat. During the warm season, from march to october, is possible to eat en plain air, in the garden.

“Dine in the park.”
Reviewed September 10, 2010

The “Red Shadow” is a great little place. You can eat indoors amongst the books, or across the narrow street in the public park. On our first visit,I had trofie pasta with pesto, which while OK, wasn't exceptional; my wife's ravioli with ragu was utterly delicious. For the main course, I had salt cod Mediterranean style with couscous which was also great. The pasta starters are small enough to enable you to have two or three courses, should you wish and at €8, good value. We washed it down with a local Ligurian white at €16. It was so good we returned the next day where I had mezzaluna ravioli with ragu. Next my wife had stuffed braised beef rolls and I had...well I don't know what I had but it was fantastic! The menu is hand written and we had trouble reading it, so the excellent waiter translated it for us and when he described my main as a Ligurian speciality, I simply said “Yes”. It was a very light fish-cake dish, with salad. My wife had the chocolate tart to finish which was also very good. The wine choice was from the same producer as yesterday, (Bisson), but this time it was a stupendous red and at €20 a bottle, well worth the price. Main courses weigh in at about €10 to €12. Fantastic place, can't recommend it enough.
