“What a view!”
Reviewed February 26, 2013

Camere - Rooms di Martina Callo is located on the small square at the harbor in Vernazza. We arrived knowing from reviews we had read that we were facing many stairs to get to our room. My wife has knee problems and was not looking forward to the climb. When we reached room #3 at the top of 75 stairs and saw the view from our private patio, we knew we made the right choice. The room itself was clean and comfortable and included a small refrigerator. The bathroom was small but adequate and again, very clean. As mentioned in other reviews, there is no breakfast included with the room but we found an especially good spot for breakfast pastries at Il Pirata della Cinque Terre just above the train station. Other than no breakfast, the only thing that can be considered a negative is the chiming of the bells in the nearby church at 7:00am each morning. They will definitely wake you up. We just took it as our wake-up call and smiled. If you want the bottom line, my wife wants to go back to Vernazza and stay in the same room, 75 steps or not.

Room Tip: Room #3 is a few more steps (75), but the view from the patio is worth it.

Vernazza is such an incredible place. The village is make a miraculous recovery from the 2011 mudslide! Please do not be put off visiting Vernazza because of rebuilding concerns. It was great to see the Blue Marlin Bar open and operating along with the bakery, small market, bank the gelato shop and other shops along the main street.

Martina has installed air-conditioning in at least 2 of her 4 rooms and she has made wi-fi available. Even in mid-October the a/c was a nice amenity to have. Room #2 is very spacious and has a respectable size bathroom. Room #3 is considerable smaller but you get the roof-top patio. From the roof-top you can look down into the village square, over to the castle or out into the beautiful harbor.

Martina's rooms are just a short walk from the train station. That's the easy part. Once you arrive at Martina's building, there are about 70 steps between you and Room #2 and even a few more steps to arrive at the roof-top room! You get your exercise but it truly is apart of the Italian experience. Everywhere you go you encounter steps and Cinque Terra is no different. Martina takes great pride in having her rooms, including the bathrooms, spotless. The rooms are modestly furnished but exceptionally clean.

Cinque Terra is still working on repairing the hiking trail between the 5 villages. As a result of the damage from the 2011 rains the trail was not open during our stay. We were looking forward to hiking the trail but perhaps it will be up and operational for our next visit. There are quite a few alternate hiking trails open and available for the more seasoned hikers.

I'm going to pass this small tidbit along to you. I would not advise staying along the main street east of the train station. This section of the village is in a major building project. The construction noise starts very early and goes until dark. I know this is a vital and necessary rebuilding but as a visitor on vacation I would not want my camere room to be in this location.

Martina, thank you for making our stay so wonderful.

We had the great good luck to rent Martina's top floor Room #3 and it was worh every one of the seventy some steps to get there! The room itself was comfortable and quaint. Clean and certainly enough for a couple but the large terrace where we could share a glass of wine before going out o dinner, watching the sun set. Wouldn't stay anywhere else in Cinque Terre.

Room Tip: Some of Martina's rooms are at the back of the building and have no view. Be sure to rent a vie...

We loved our stay in Vernazza, Cinque Terre. Martina welcomed us on arrival to show us our room which had an excellent location, right in the centre of town! The room was spacious, very clean, confortable and even had a small kitchenette with coffee and tea making facilities and a fridge. We were right on the main street in the centre of all the action, bars, restaurants and the small beach. Breakfast is not included in the price but that isn´t a problem as the bakery opposite offers a freshly baked selection of pastries. Or you could walk 5 minutes up the street to Capitano de Cinque Terre for the best sicilian pastries! The only negative with being in the centre of town is it can be quite noisy from early in the morning until late at night. However, we enjoyed our three night stay and would definitely recommend it!

My girlfriend and I booked 3 nights to relax from busy cities and interrailing and found that Vernazza is such a lovely little town. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. The town has really recovered from the mudslides of 2011. We stayed at room Martina and found it to be the best location is town right on the main piazza a stone throw from the water at an affordable price. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommendable getaway!!

Our stay at Martina rooms was great. Our room was spotless, spacious and comfortable. We even had a refrigerator, which was a surprise. The rooms are literally right on the square, yet the noise was never an issue. The view was amazing from our room (triple room), i can't imagine the view that the balcony has up top! Martina is very sweet. Overall, Vernazza is a charming little town and Martina rooms are the perfect place to stay, i can't wait to be back!

The room was very clean and in a wonderful location - right in the heart of Vernazza. It's a very basic room, but in Cinque Terre, you don't need a plush room because the scenery is breath-taking and you want to spend all your time enjoying the outdooors: the spectacular views, the amazing hikes, the refreshing water, the sunbathing on rocks, the delicious and fresh seafood, the pesto pizza, the pesto lasagna...the list goes on and on.

This was my first visit to Cinque Terre and I loved Vernazza's low-key and local vibe. You can just melt into relaxing in Vernazza!

Please note that Vernazza is still feeling the effecs of the Oct. 2011 mud slide, but the town is feverishly working to get back on it's feet. In fact, the day we left, they were installing an ATM - which is huge, b/c otherwise you had to travel to Monterosso for cash. The town and people is beautiful and I was happy to support them as they continue to recover from the mudslide.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a view or the room with the balcony.
