A Ca Da Nonna Di Callo Luca
Reviewed July 22, 2010

Hello, we spent a wonderful weekend in Vernazza. Tidy rooms, clean, surrounded by a nice terrace from which you can enjoy a great view of Vernazza and the sea ... Last night from the terrace, we enjoyed one of those sunsets ...
Luca was very attentive and available for straight, more ... We certainly will return them to us!

We booked this online at 70euro a night for two rooms and a third with a balcony (no view) for 80euro. It was spotless, spacious with a Greek-like decor. There were 3 couples so this place was perfect as it had 3 bedrooms in one building. Each room had a small refrigerator, and plenty of fresh air. Luca, one of the owners, met us at the train station and helped two of our friends with their very heavy luggage. He took us to the apartment and gave us the key and said he’d be by the next night. That was it! Easy checkin and he showed up the last night and collected the money (cash only) All in all, a great deal.

Just exactly what we had in mind - a simple apartment which was clean and comfortable.

We didn't get to meet Luca and it was his mother Anna who met us at the train station. It was convenient to get to the apartment from the train station with minor hassle. I believe we only had to get up one or two sets of stairs which isn't much of an issue if you know Cinque Terre.

The apartment was spacious and a very comfortable bed. Bathroom was clean. Nothing to complain about.

My cousin & I spent 3 nights in Vernazza in May & really enjoyed our Cinque Terre experience. Most of my communication pre arrival was with Luca, whose grandmother is the "Nonna" of these rented rooms. However, it was his mother Anna who met us at the train station & directed us to the room. She was most apologetic re her lack of English. but her English was certainly better than my Italian & she had a friendly welcoming manner. I never did get to meet Luca who works at one of the local restaurants.
At first, struggling up the stairs of Vernazza with our cases, we did wonder what we had let ourselves in for. but in hindsight we should only have taken hand luggage there & left the large cases at La Spezia. The stairs to the room itself are steep & VERY narrow so it was quite a mission getting up there, but we did find it much easier when we left.
The room is quite spacious enough for 2 people & the single beds were very comfortable. The bathroom set up was excellent & spotlessly clean & it was great to have the little balcony to sit out on & relax in the evenings, even if we were not blessed with a water view. The fridge is a blessing also; a pity more European rooms are not equipped with them.
Vernazza is a really lovely little village, although bustling with activity & tourists during the daytime it's even more pleasant in the evenings when the day trippers have all gone home.
Plenty of cafes here, but the pick of the eateries is "The Pirates", run by identical twin brothers, situated on the street that runs under the railway line, past the post office & beside the car park. Best place in town to eat - pity we discovered it just as we were leaving!
Don't miss the view from the Castello - it's quite outstanding & be sure to visit the other 4 villages that make up the Cinque Terre. Don't let the 400+ steps to Corniglia put you off - take your time climbing the stairs & enjoy this lovely little town - very different from the others as it is not at sea level & has a more relaxed atmosphere.

A ca'da nonna is a great compact studio apartment. Vernazza was the pick of the towns as it was beautiful, had some great palces to eat and quietened down in the evening when all the day visitors left.

We had been staying at B&Bs for two weeks and having an apartment where we could make our own meals was just what we needed.

It is a big enough apartment that when our toddler went to sleep we could stay up and read and relax.

Getting to the apartment is fine - up some steep stairs which is to be expected in Vernazza.

The negatives were that while it is right in town it is on the path of Vernazza to Corniglia - so with the windows open it was noisy. It is on the ground floor so people walking past are right there.
The other negative was that there was a great big street light right above the front door that shone a bright whilte light through the openings on the wall above the lounge area. There were no curtains so I kept waking up in the night thinking that it was the morning.

The first thing to know about Vernazza is that if you're not comfortable climbing a lot of stairs, it will be difficult to get around. But if that's not the case, it's one of the loveliest, most charming places I've been. We couldn't have been happier with our room at a Ca' da Nonna. It was spacious, had a great little balcony and a fridge, which came in handy and a clean, modern bathroom. There's no view of the sea (unless you consider the sliver you can see from one of the windows), but the balcony gives you the chance to feel part of the neighborhood and people watch. It's close to town and the harbour. We didn't see Lucca after the first day, but his mom, Anna is extremely nice and hospitable. I'd highly recommend this very clean, comfortable, reasonably priced place.

We called Luca at the payphone nearest the train station in Vernazza like he had said to do upon our arrival and he quickly met us and guided us to our room. It was located only a few steps from the main street and we were impressed with the layout, cleanliness, and a balcony to sit on to enjoy some downtime. The bathroom even had travel size shampoo, emery board, shower cap, qtips, etc.

There are 3 rooms in the building and ours was at the top of the building. The 10 extra euros were definitely worth it.

This is a straight room not a b&b just in case you are thinking it's a b&b. For breakfast, take a train over to Corniglia and go the little outdoor eatery called terra rossa for a cafe' and breakfast.
