Enjoyed the local dishes including the pasta and pesto and amazing fresh anchovies. Some of the best meals of our trip.

We were in Vernazza during September in the most ideal weather conditions imaginable. Everyone who came to town stayed all day and then stayed for dinner. So all the restaurants were pretty busy. We were fortunate to get a table where we could enjoy the crowd without being in the crowd. Gianni Franzi is the first place people think of when Vernazza comes up. They have a hotel, bar and restaurant. It's an institution in town. We enjoyed the atmosphere sitting outside on a gorgeous night. The food was good but not remarkable. The service was businesslike and efficient. The overall experience was good but did not win our loyalty.

We went here because Ruth Rodgers from the River Cafe in London rates it as one of her favourite restaurants in the world. I wouldn't go that far but it's a very good trattoria in a location over-run by average restaurants serving tourist menu slop to hordes of camera wielding tour groups. The pasta is excellent, the anchovies and squid were superb, and the food was clearly fresh and made with love. The menu was affordable (pasta at around 9 euros, mains from 14) and the service was efficient, the staff were a little brisk but rather that than the gushing rubbish you get elsewhere. Avoid the stuffed mussels, which bizarrely have egg and cheese in them.

Located on the main square, the location is great. The service was ok, but the local trofie pesto was delicious. Prices were average.

This restaurant is right on the square in Vernazza and overlooks the harbor. The tables are close to one another but the overall scenery is not lacking in intimacy or romance. The waiter recommended the gnocchi with pesto, an off-menu dish, and it was the BEST PESTO DISH - EVER! Really, truly, it was epic. My husband got a t-bone steak off the Secondi list and was unimpressed. I tried it and agreed that it was "fine" but nothing to write home about. Stick with the pesto and prepare to have your mind blown.
