“Beautiful seaside views but unusual customer service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2012

Overall we enjoyed our stay at this B&B, however did experience a number of unusual events which I will share to ensure you make a suitable selection for your own acommodation. We arrived during the designated hours listed on Booking.Com only to find no one home to greet the doorbell. After a few rings, two adults answered the door and we asked if they were the owners of the B&B to which they stated they were not. After some communication we requested if they could assist us to ring the number listed (as we did not have a phone). The owner of the B&B answered and told the ladies to let us in to our room. We later found out the owner had emailed at 5pm that night to advise of how we could let ourselves in! (we had arrived by the time we were able to log onto wifi regardless!)

There were no lights in the hallway (broken?) so we stumbled into the room, and were met with what I would deem to be a two star residence which was possibly not quite to the standard we had anticipated. It did however contain all the essentials, (except drinking glasses which we later tracked down in the unattended breakfast room). It was all very unusual! As it turns out the owner does not live here, and only attends in the morning. Booking.com had advised we could pay by credit card & so did the external sign on the residence, however there was a 'cash only' sign on the (unattended!) reception desk. When we asked, the owner said we could pay by credit card, although Euro's was preferred.

The views were stunning, sea side (not quite enough of a westerly view to catch the sunset!) and of the nearby mountains and vineyards. The breakfast was simple, and I provided my own on the second morning. Cereal (with only hot milk available?), pre packaged bread, crossiants, cake etc. Fairly standard for an Italian breakfast.

All in all our stay was pleasant, with amazing seaside views, but would consider twice before booking again.

This small B&B is a wonderful place to stay in Cinque Terre. We were fortunate enough to get one of the rooms with a view and we could see the whole valley/mountainside and ocean from our room's balcony - it was amazing! The B&B was very clean, the staff were friendly, and the location was great! However, this is not in Riomaggiore like we thought. It's in a small village above Manorola - Volastra - and it's very difficult to get to (we thought we could walk to it with our luggage, but that was close to impossible). We took a TrenItalia train (we were coming from Venice) to La Spezia and then took the local Cinque Terre train to Manorola (2nd stop from La Spezia). From there, we walked into the Manrola village and took their local green bus (1.50Euro each without a park pass, but free with one). Just ask a local where the stop is and then get off at the top of the drive, at the Volastra church - about a 15-20 minute bus ride (if you ask people for help, they're really good about helping you). We walked down the trail from Volastra into Manorola and it was a steep walk - we couldn't have done that walk with our luggage. Just note that the last green bus leaves Manorola at 7:45pm, so make sure you arrive before then. Volastra is very small (maybe 100 residents), but it's secluded and worth it to stay there. We loved it - amazing!!

We really enjoyed our stay at Ca del Michele' . Usually the second week of August is very busy in Italy, but staying in this B&B made our stay quite and relaxing. Milena, the owner, is a very kind lady, the place is very clean and the price standard. Volastra is a very little town on the top of Manarola, therefore cool and fresh. The B&B has a very nice terrace where you have breakfast and can have dinner, provided you buy it at the nearby gastronomia store owned by Bruna, which prepares delicious take away hot meals. There is an ecological bus that connets Volastra with either the nearby train station or a couple of the 5 terre.

We arrived and there was no one to greet us.
There was nothing open to grab a bite in the whole town (there's just one restaurant and it was closed at 8 pm). And a closed bar with the "soon to be open sign".
The whole time we were there, we barely saw the owner, which was not friendly at all.
As usual, they try to get youto pay in cash.
The room was dirty (an empty yogourt under the bed).
To connect to Manarola (closest town) you ahve to use the shuttle service which runs every now and then with an anarchic schedule we couldn't figure out.
There is though, a beautiful little chappel on the town and the path to Corniglia is quite nice.

We spent three nights at ca del Michelê because we love to be on top of the hill with stunning sea view. The view was spectacular from our room and the breakfast lady was very helpfull with tips for food and walks. If you arrive after 1pm nobody is available for check in. Breakfast in the morning is great with sea view and a verandah weather permitting. The down side is that the breakfast room with tables and sofa is locked up as soon you finish breakfast! NO other room to spend some time outside your bedroom As our room was very small and very cold-no heating untill 7pm just in time to go out for dinner, it was very uncomfortable unless you go straight to BED!
No duna covers just a blanket did not do the trick either. If you are looking for a great meal don't stay in Volastra...Go to Trattoria dal Billy in Manarola 20min by foot down hill the food high light during our Italy trip!

We stayed three nights in this lovely little B&B, up in the hills above Manarola. You can reach it by car, by riding the shuttle bus (fare is included in your Cinque Terre pass) or by having a bracing 45 minute climb up through the vineyards from Manarola. The B&B is in the heart of the old village of Volastra, and you reach it by walking through the old village pathways (if you have a car, you can park it at the edge of the village and take a short walk to the B&B). The owners, Michelle and Melena are friendly and accommodating. Their place has been completely renovated and is clean and welcoming. A continental breakfast with yogurt and lots of coffee is included. The views of the surrounding landscape and Mediterranean are stunning. We found it a quiet refuge in the Cinque Terre region.

  • Liked — Peaceful retreat in quaint authentic Cinque Terre village
  • Disliked — nothing
