Vernazza-Monterosso was only open one or two days a week, and Vernazza - Corniglia was the only trail open daily when I visited in July 2013. I have done all of the hikes except the Via dell'Amore and they were all excellent, with striking views - but Vernazza-Monterosso was definitely the most difficult (and most beautiful), with lots of steps and up-and-downs.

We managed to hike from Monterosso to Corgnilia but last section back to Rioggamore was closed off to landslides, which was a shame but the two walks we did were great fun, just make sure you stock up on water! No where to re-fill mid hike although can in the villages.

There was no better way to enjoy the Cinque Terre then through the hikes. As of June 2013 you can only do Monterosso - Vernazza - Corniglia on trail 2. Thank god I couldn't have gone any further! I would have recommended doing it in two days unless you are an avid hiker, but that's mostly because you want to take some time and enjoy the towns in between. The sights above the towns were breathtaking. Every 15 minutes was prettier than the last. I couldn't get enough. I did enjoy Vernazza - Corniglia hike a little more because the views leaving Vernazza and entering Corniglia were both my favorite.

Although these hikes are a bit strenuous there were all types of people on this trail of all ages, sizes, athleticism, etc. It's a trail you can do at your own pace and you shouldn't feel like you have to rush through, there are plenty of places to take breaks if needed. I would recommend the following things: Do this earlier in the morning in the hotter summer weather before the sun gets too hot, bring water, wear sneakers or appropriate shoes - not flip flops, dress comfortably, take your time, wear sunscreen, and charge your camera before you go because you will not stop taking pictures!

Time from Monterosso to Vernazza was about an hour and a half, and Vernazza to Corniglia was maybe only slightly less.

If you really want to see Cinque Terre you have to walk on at least 1 trail from one village to the next. If is difficult to describe in words, but the views are incredible and you get to really SEE the landscapes.

The time between villages varies, but you can probably safely plan for about 2-3 hours in between each village depending on fitness level. I would recommend planning to eat a meal in one village, then hiking to the next village and eating the next meal.

These trails can be very rigorous since the trail travels up and down mountains. So keep in mind that it is a strenuous hike, but you will be rewarded by the experience. Drink plenty of water, and wear comfortable shoes.

The only section of the Trail 2 that was open was between Monterosso and Vernazza but it was drop-dead gorgeous even in a drizzle. Would love to come back when the whole trail is open again.
