We spent 4 nights in this spacious and clean 2 story apartment on the harbor (Apartment Zia Maria). The apartment has a bedroom and bath on the bottom floor and full kitchen, couch, dining table, and porch on the upper floor. The bedroom windows overlooked the edge of the harbor and the sounds of the waves crashing on the shore and the harbor rocks was the most pleasing sounds you can imagine. The upstairs porch (with table, 4 plastic chairs, and 1 lounge chair) afforded a great view of the harbor, part of the charming city, the hills, and the open sea. The porch gets the morning sun with direct exposure between about 9:00 and 16:00. (Note, there is no Wi Fi in the apartment but you can access the internet at the train station for 5 euro for 24 hours and at a couple of bars on via Colombo.).
The kitchen and dining area allowed us to eat in the room and we took advantage by picking up food at several spots. We had some delicious take-out freshly cooked pasta and focaccia at Te la do io la merenda, a small shop on the right as you climb the hill on the main street (via Colombo) in town. We also found the local market shop, Alimentari Franca, as a great place for supplies and for dinner items like octopus, sun-died tomato, olives, anchovies, cheese, and focaccia – it’s the first shop on the right as you head up via Colombo. We also found the foccacio to be excellent at Panificio Rosi (on the left as you climb the main street).
Checking in was efficient and the lady on duty spoke enough English for things to go smoothly. She walked us to the apartment and showed us around the place. We did figure out after the fact that when checking in, it is wise to leave one person with the baggage at the bottom of the street (via Colombo) where you exit the tunnel from the train, and have one person walk up the street to the office to check-in (remember to take all of the passports with you). For our apartment, it certainly would have reduced the stress of dragging our bags up the hill. From the bottom of via Colombo, we had 56 steps down to the harbor and then 52 steps up to the apartment (and most of those are giant steps, like half again the normal height) so be prepared to haul your luggage.
We went to all 5 cities and definitely liked Riomaggiore the most, with a good selection of restaurants, pretty views, and friendly people. This apartment was a perfect base to relax with great views, convenience of eating in, and good value for a clean and comfortable place to sleep with the wonderful sounds of the crashing waves.
