“Likely the place to stay”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2013

Cinque Terre is truly a great way to experience Italy. It's easy to see all 5 villages (be sure you do - they're very different from one another) and the water views and fresh seafood are great (try the anchovies in lemon - nothing like anchovies in the US - yummy!). Hotel La Zorza is up a steep hill (I recommend that you stop halfway up and have a gelato when you arrive!!) and it's pretty basic but probably this is the place to stay if you want to be in the first village. I'm never thrilled when I see tired old bedspreads (I really don't think they are washed in between guests - ugh) but things seemed fairly clean overall. We didn't ask too much of the "front desk" because the woman on duty didn't speak English and even though she was pleasant, she seemed a little concerned when we asked any questions. The "desk" consisted of a tiny, almost outdoor room so don't expect a typical hotel lobby. Another review suggests that the hotel is at the bottom of the hill - really not true, it's a hike so be prepared and also be prepared for many more steps (steep and old stone) to get to your room - steps and hills are typical in Cinque Terre but if you have any physical limitations you need to know what to expect. What concerned me most of all is that the doors only locked with a key - a serious fire hazard even for adults as there was no easy way to get out in an emergency. My husband went with our "adult kids" to the only place you can use the internet (and it didn't work - not a big deal because it's vacation, after all...) and because I wanted to go to sleep, he took the room key. It was only after he left that I realized I couldn't get out of the room while he was gone. The same was true of the outside door - it, too, was locked by the owner at night and the only access is with a second key that was given to guests. It's a nice security measure BUT it leaves security to the guests versus the management. I really don't know what other hotels were like in the villages - so I can't compare - if you're looking for something with some comfort and pampering, this isn't the place but if you just want a basic place to stay and aren't worried about the door locking issue, this may be just fine.

Hotel is easily accessible from the train station, through the tunnel, it's first hotel on your right as you exit the tunnel. There are stairs up to your room, but at least you'll only do it once with luggage! After that you are close to the tunnel to the trains and the marina and "beach". Breakfast is included and you'll get "real" coffee. Shower was small - fine for us but be aware if you are a plus size. Fridge in room, great for freezing water bottles for the hot summer days. Wifi included. Be warned that early checkouts need to be settled the day prior - although we didn't think that 8.30+ was early. We loved it and would recommend to friends - you'll love Cinque Terre!

We spent 3 nights here and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our room had a balcony (not many did) which was perfect for watching the people troop up and down the hill. The room (double) was spacious and clean, with a decent bathroom and a fridge, which was great! It is at the bottom of the hill - a real plus after a few days of walking around Cinque Terre. Easy access to the beach and trains. The staff were very friendly and hard working. Breakfast in the Cafe each morning made a great start to the day. It had the only "street side" bar with a really cool vibe. Definitely recommend it!

I read in previous reviews that the hotel was located just beyond the archway into Riomaggiore. They weren't lying! It's literally the first hotel that you see. Considering that the hill is rather steep, Hotel La Zorza is worth every penny! Everyone working at the hotel was extremely kind. Snacks are provided with drink orders when sitting outside or inside.
Our room was on the third floor. We climbed several floors with our baggage but that comes with the territory in the Cinque Terre! The room was clean and spacious. A functioning hair dryer was provided as well as a safe for a 10 Euro deposit. The area was extremely safe when we were there for three days. Trains, grocery stores, and many restaurants are located within a close proximity to the hotel.

I think this hotel is better than average when you compare it with surrounding places in Riomaggiore but really if it were to be in any major city it would hardly get 3 stars. It is very close to the base of the Riomaggiore and that's one of the few good sides of it. Other good thing about this place is that the continental breakfast is much richer than all the other breakfasts we saw in Italy (at the same price range hotels). It is on the expensive side though given the quality of the room and the building itself. Building is old but that's inevitable in Riomaggiore as they preserve what's been built as much as possible. However I expected a better interior for the price we payed to be honest. Beds were soft and old. Upper level rooms would be hard to reach for old people. Its restaurant turns into a bar in the night and music can be problematic for early sleepers. I enjoyed there though as it is one of the few places that you can see and meet other young people in Riomaggiore.

We ended up in the Stevi Apartment part of the hotel, which was spacious and nicely apportioned. The matresses were not the most comfortable and I would not recommend the staying for more than a few days if you have a bad back.

While the room itself was clean, it was also a bit musty. The staff had a dehumidifier in the room to fight the battle, but understand these are extremely old buildings in a coastal town.

The staff at the bar was very friendly... Guido, in particular, was very helpful. The bar itself is great. The only snag, service-wise, was check out. It took 20 minutes to get someone to the desk to check us out. Bear that in mind when timing your check out versus catching a train.

The location is good, just up the street from the tunnel to the train station. Yes, there are plenty of stairs, as you will find in a Cinque Terre hotel.

Stayed for 4 days ..Cinque Terre is amazing and Zorza is a great base.
I knew I was on a winner when I saw the amount of locals who frequent the little bar/ cafe for breakfast/coffee/drinks each day.

The rooms are clean and quaint with outside stone stairway access..typical of the Cinque Terre...
A/c is provided and probably necessary as the village wakes up at 6am for deliveries etc. so the windows will have to stay closed!
The owner Guido and staff and friendly and good fun...the sofas outside the little bar are the best spot for people watching in the entire village...and you really should try the Mojito's...but maybe not the 30 euro big jug..not if you want to walk the trails the next day!

I would completely recommend this little hotel!

I hope to return someday!

Room Tip: There's a room on the second floor with a little balcony overlooking the street...looks lovely!
