“Our 7th Stay”
Reviewed July 10, 2012

This was our seventh stay at Hotel La Spiaggia. We have come to love the owner, Andrea Poggi, his family Isabella, Maria, Debra,, and dedicated assistant Ella. Andrea is truly a man of the world and it is interesting to converse with him. One of our favorite things to do is enjoy a dessert wine only available in Cinque Terra at the end of the day while we discuss the history of Italy. The hotel has made some terrific changes since 2006. They have redecorated, added wi-fi, and refrigerators. Andrea has not only connected us with terrific restaurants in Monterosso al Mare but has recommended restaurants in other cities in Italy. We already have our reservations for next year and look forward to seeing all those interesting people again.

My boyfriend and I spent 4 nights at the hotel in July. It was our first stop in Italy and we were very happy. Upon arrival we were met by the very friendly Ella and given a glass of wine before going to our room.

We booked room 23 which has a large covered terrace which we loved, and enjoyed some wines and pizzas here in the evenings. The room was simple but comfortable and clean. The shower was fine, unlike others we have since found in Italy!

The location was steps from the beach and a 10 minute pleasant walk into the old town through the tunnel. Our 2 best meals were right opposite at Cacina and next door at Mikys.

Breakfast was great with a variety to choose from: cereals, breads, pastries, eggs, meats, cheese, fruit, yoghurt. Etc. the staff were always cheerful and helpful with suggestionsoff where to go and places to eat.

We would definitely recommend the hotel and would return ourselves. l

Don't get fooled by the good reviews. The owner Andrea is rude and inappropriate. When you ask for help he says, "You have problems" and makes sarcastic remarks about you learning another language. When he fails to understand the people he is talking to speak 3, compared to his sub-par english. Recommends terrible restaurants with bad service then asks you how they were. When you give your honest opinion he tells you that you are wrong. I also heard other people make the same comments about the resturants and he defended the restaurants by making his own inflated compliments of them. Don't bother asking for a fan in the heat or any other information from Andrea or you will get on his bad side and receive insulting remarks. His daughter Maria is sweet and easy to deal with. Will not return again after the disappointment.

Dear Guest,

referring to your letter "Go somewhere else" I'm here to tell you that on Tripadvisor there are 329 good reviews judging Andrea's qualities about his english, his recommendations for restaurants, for travels and so on.

Andrea lived in England for 15 years where he got 3 degrees in English and English Literature.
To tell you the truth in none of any Oxford dictionaries "sub-par" does exist and I tried to ask few English and none of them never heard of it.
He's fluent in over half a dozen languages and he knows what he's talking about.

The restaurants he suggested to you as well as to thousands of people they all got a good write up on Tripadvisor. In the world there are tastes and tastes and taste cannot be discussed.
A couple of weeks ago a couple of clients not being happy with the Parma ham that we give for breakfast they asked me for Spam.
Read well all the comments and you surely find other people that they enjoyed a lot that restaurant that you called terrible .

On top of that Andrea wouldn't dream to insult anybody because insults are not his cup a tea. I'll let you decide who the fool one is.

OK let's get the negatives out in the open first. Some of the rooms are small. Occasionally the breakfasts are poor. The wi-fi is a bit hit and miss.
But none of that matters. Andrea and his daughter Maria provide all the service, support, humour, local wine, stories etc., that more than make up for any inadequacies.
In the room everything works well - the showers are powerful, the beds are comfortable. The breakfast area is very nice, the breakfasts are generally good, at their best on Thursdays and Fridays presumably when the new fruit comes from the market. Great coffee.
And the location couldn't be better, very near the sandy part of the beach (and there's not much of that for miles) and a short flat walk from the station.
Oh, and Andrea is a very knowledgeable raconteur with an unbelievably detailed recollection of his times in London over the past 50 years - as a life long Londoner myself, he taught me a lot about my home city!

After reading some good reviews, we chose this hotel for our stay in Cinque Terre . We were very underwhelmed. Very small rooms, even by Italy's standards, no air conditioning during a very hot week, and an owner that loved to talk about himself and recommend sub-par restaurants that he obviously gets commissions from. Location was great until you try to sleep at 2 am, when there are loud people and barking dogs right under your window all night! Can't shut the window because you will die from the heat! One small and rattling fan is all you have for heat-relief!
Will not return, and recommend you choose another hotel!

Dear Guest,
you cannot have your cake and eat it.
About your complaints of having received a small room even by Italian standards you have to realize the fact that in the all of 5 Terre we are working mainly on buildings that are over 100 years old. Building has been prohibited ever since 1970 and that is the luck that kept us unique all over the world. Otherwise we would be very similar to Long Beach.
If you read well the emails that we sent you, we DID specify that the room had NO air conditioning and we re-read it together on your arrival. We kept for you a nice room overlooking the sea with a balcony as you asked for. Everywhere in the world if you sleep on the promenade facing the sea it might happen to hear loud people under your window. Unfortunately we cannot stop people talking in the street or barking dogs!
Concerning the commissions that you talk about..I have already given an answer to a previous letter last year that we are fortunately born pretty well off and we do not need to speculate on a few Euros. We are only pleased to send our customers where they get good food and good price.
We are probably the only hotel in the world that changes your currency at bank's rate with no commissions.
The management.

We stayed three wonderfull nights here in April , Andrea, his daughter Maria and front desk manager Ella all spoke fluent English (Reuben the dog not so good with English !) and were very helpfull with directions, restaurant referals, banking, purchasing train tickets etc . ! Very nice hotel right on the beach and right next to a fantastic restaurant Miky . We would definatly stay at this hotel again , and looking forward to more great conversation with that fascinating host Andrea !!!.

After trawling through the reviews on Tripadvisor I knew this hotel would be a great place to stay for our 5 night Cinque Terre holiday in May, but I didn't realise that it was possibly in the best location in Monterosso. Being close to the train station was a plus, but being across from the beach was fantastic.

I also don't think I expected the great service we experienced - from being welcomed with a glass of wine while our paperwork was being processed, given many recommendations for lunch and dinner (and being booked in to these restaurants), provided with train and ferry times, informaiton on walks to everyone in the team being just genuinely friendly - nothing was too much. Andrea the owner I think knows everything there is to know about the area, and everyone in it!

The only problem was that we had to leave!

Room Tip: We stayed in a twin room with AC - so we didn't have a balcony but we knew this when booking and...
