The hike was challenging, beautiful and amazing. Be sure to have a camera for all the picture ops. The hike takes about an 1 hr 45 minutes alot of up and down in the mountain. It gets emotional when you arrive in veranza to an accordian player on the path.

We were thrilled this track reopened so we could experience the challenge of walking this cliff between the first 2 Cinque Terre villages. It took almost 2 hours with lots of photo stops and one wrong turn. The track is marked by a stripe of white and a stripe of red paint on a rock at junctions. You need to purchase a ticket fromthe national park station. We were happy to pay as it must cost a fortune to maintain these paths in such remote, inaccessible places.

The path does not have a rail in places and we assisted one lady who stumbled and fell in a slippery patch. It was busy and hot so wear solid shoes and a hat and carry water. Do not try this if your body is not in reasonable shape.

However, the ocean views into the clear blue water; the glimpses of the picturesque cliff hugging villages and walking through the gravevine terraces are spectacular and well worth the effort.

This is not an easy hike...as others have noted, the path is often very steep, not level and, in places, you may have room for only one person and have to bend over to get under overhanging brush. The rocks can also be extremely slippery when wet and there are few guardrails. With that said, these are some of the most amazing views ever! When you turn the corner and see Vernazza below you, it is worth it! Plus, a good 2 hour hike makes the pesto pasta taste even better!

If staying in Monterosso when visiting Cinque Terre, one has to take the breathtaking lower or near sea level trail to the next village of Vernazza. The views start out immediately as you wind out of Monterosso . The trail is stone and has one compelling view after another as it winds along the beautiful coastal area, rising to about 140 m at its high point. It is about 4 km long, called and marked as the Blue Trail and is an easy 1 1/2 to 2 hour walk. The hike with lunch in Vernazza, and then the return ( one can also take either the train one stop , or the coastal boat) back to Monterosso makes a wonderful day outing. If staying in Vernazza, one can do the reverse hike.

We hiked from Monterosso to Vernazza a few weeks ago on a beautiful day when there was a fair amount of foot traffic in both directions. My husband and I usually can walk a mile on a level surface in 16-17 minutes -- but this is by no means a level surface. It is rocky, steep, uneven, sometimes muddy and in most places, lacking in guardrails, and it took us exactly 2 hours. We did stop several times to admire the views and take photos, and we also had to stop many more times when we encountered other groups in areas that were basically single file pathways with little maneuvering room and where everyone needed to pass safely.

We felt the walk was well worth the effort -- there is amazing scenery you can only see from this vantage point -- and the experience was definitely enhanced by the fact that we had a near-perfect weather day. Here are a few recommendations:

1. Wear sturdy shoes with good traction -- we saw a few people with flip-flops, which are just not safe here!
2. Bring water.
3. Don't think you can maintain a brisk pace -- there will be people ahead of you on the path, and in the narrow or slippery spots you will need to slow down for your own safety and that of others.
4. Allow yourself enough time to look around and see the magnificent coastline, the terraced farms and vineyards, the brilliant foliage and the centuries of history that are represented in this region.
