Owner description: Reconstructed in 1632 after the previous church was destroyed, the Church of San Francesco contains some fine art including a Crucifixion by Van Dyck, two canvases by Flasella, a marble triptych by Domenico Gare (1529) and the Dead Christ from Maragliano. Nera the church there is the Monastery of Capuchin Friars a very ancient structure with great garden where Friars live. It is a place of Peace and spirituality with a gorgeus view on the seaside.

This is a true and genuine example of italian church architecture. The place is amazing and you will gain a good memory of Sarzana.

“Beautiful in every way”
Reviewed July 16, 2012

Were we ever surprised to happen upon this lovely Church. The path leading up to the church is so serene and the view of the town and ocean is spectacular. The church is so peaceful and when we entered we could hear a monk chanting some prayers which was very moving. We then continued to walk up the path to a very ancient cemetery which has some very old markers and crypts. We stayed for over two hours enjoying the view and the tranquility of the setting.

“Lovely church in a wonderful location”
Reviewed July 8, 2012

You can't beat this. Ok the church itself isn't particularly beautiful but it's mystical and has a lovely set of old pieces of art and ironwork scattered around outside, not to mention the lovely cemetery and the famous statue on a rocky promontory.

“Peaceful and interesting”
Reviewed April 18, 2012

We walked up to the church about mid morning and found ourselves the only visitors so it was peaceful and charming. The views are wonderful and the church was quite atmospheric with recorded music being played as we took in the statues and paintings.
The nearby cemetery is also well worth a wander, it brings the local history into play through the recurring family names and the dates. If in Monterosso put this on the to see list.
