The positive and negative comments of previous reviewers ring true. As part of a group we were allocated a small ground floor room next to the public toilet with only a glimpse of the ocean through the trees, so the view was available only when we left the room. But as tourists we were there to explore the region, not to loll around the pool - and it's quite an effort to walk to/from town. It was exceedingly noisy on the Saturday night and we were woken every morning by outside workers. The breakfast spread was good, no better than other hotels we used. Reports from our group of the hotel's food were lukewarm. There are good restaurants in town.

So, if you want to laze around a hotel with a great view, a good pool, in tired surrounds, this might be the place for you - if you pay well for it. Otherwise, consider elsewhere.

This fabulously located hotel at the top of the town was a grand dame at one time. It is not what it used to be. Still it could be again with a decorators touch. I would start by getting rid of the kitch decor that is everywhere. Nothing goes with anything. Even the nicest rooms are tired. The kitchen still can be proud of the food it serves, but why dine here when there are so many wonderful restaurants in town.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 301 and though it is small and a little tired it has a great veranda and sun loung...

Hotel Porto Roca is an enigma. On one hand it has fantastic views because it sits right on the water's edge, perched high on the cliffs. On the other hand, the hike up to the hotel can be tiring especially after a long day of activities. To their credit, the hotel does offer a taxi service to/from the hotel and the main parking lot or train station. You definitely want to take advantage of this upon check-in / check-out. The other downside is the price. It is quite expensive as you are paying for the view. On a positive note, they just installed a gorgeous, brand new pool (opened July 2013) and it is wonderful. It is an infinity pool overlooking the sea. Plenty of chairs for sunning / relaxing. The service in the restaurant for dinner was tired. The waiters seemed bored. Try dining at other places such as La Tortuga (get there early and ask to be seated outside with a sea view) in the New Town section, or for an upscale gourmet seafood dinner make reservations well ahead of time at Miky. With regard to the hotel, avoid the back rooms (the ones without a sea view). They are small, cramped, and overpriced with a view of a stone wall. You definitely want to stay in Monterosso (compared to the other 4 villages) as it is the biggest village and has the most to do. If you do not mind spending big $$$ on your hotel, then go for Hotel Porto Roca and make sure to get a sea view room. Have drinks and snacks on the terrace just outside the bar, or lounge in the pool area and soak up the view. If you are on a budget, however, you can get a better deal in town. A good hotel at a reasonable price is the Hotel Margherita.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms in back (non sea view). They are small, cramped, and overpriced with a view of a sto...

We had the pleasure to spend three nights in this great place. The location by itself is unique but the level of service topped everything. Warm, friendly and charming staff that did everything to make our stay so pleaant. Everything in this place is just outstanding and the only bad thing is to have to leave this jewel again. We just loved it!

Room Tip: There is only one Garden Suite......nothing can top it!

We had the pleasure of staying here for a couple of days while hiking Cinque Terre. The room was comfortable and well appointed. The view was spectacular. Breakfast was excellent with many choices, including eggs, breads, fresh fruit, yogurts, juices, and cereals along with coffee or tea.

This hotel is high on a cliff. The location is a short walk to the town center. Actually, it was much more peaceful staying here than it would have been staying at a place in town and we found it quite relaxing.

The hotel staff was very nice and helpful. The blonde woman who was criticized in several reviews was extremely nice.

We found dinner was fairly lack lustre and would not recommend eating at the restaurant for any meals other than breakfast. We ate there because we had a heavy day of hiking and too tired to go searching for another restaurant.

While we were there, a wedding took place outside our room. What a romantic setting!

The pool looked new and although we did not use it, it was located in the most gorgeous setting.

We stayed here for 3 nights and felt like we had fallen into the lap of luxury. It's the only hotel in Monterosso that has a pool - and a gorgeous infinity pool, high on a cliff above the Mediterranean. The staff couldn't be more pleasant - the desk staff was helpful with restaurant recommendations and reservations and ferry schedules. The bartender made a great caiparhina and brought us lots of free snacks with our drinks. The wait staff for breakfast were attentive, polite, and friendly (as were all staff members). Our spacious room and bathroom were on the first floor with a small balcony (although the balcony was small and only could hold one chair, we never used it b/c the sun was too hot). Free wi-fi and free breakfast were fantastic. This is a gorgeous venue high on a cliff with scenic views of the beach in Monterosso - but be forewarned that you must be in good enough shape to walk up the steep hill - or take a taxi (we liked to think that it helped us burn calories after a fine dinner in town). After visiting the many towns of Cinque Terre, I believe this is the nicest resort in all of the towns and would highly recommend it. Room tip - If you think you might want to use your balcony, ask for a room on the third floor where you may pay a bit more, but you will have more privacy.

Room Tip: Balconies are very hot during the day, but if you want privacy on one, ask for a suite on the top fl...
