“A lovely time in the magical Cinqueterre Area”
Reviewed November 22, 2012

Stated at the Albergo al Carugio hotel in Monterosso al Mare as a base for our visit of the Cinqueterre area.
The hotel is located at a walking distance of about 15 minutes walk from the train station. Rooms are very neat and functionnal. The management could not be friendlier. Felt like home!
There are not a lot of places like Cinqueterre. Quite spectacular and pittoresque. The train system is very practical to travel between the small villages. Since the lower hiking trail was closed due to the mud slides of a few years ago, we experienced hiking between 2 of the villages on the higher trail. A hike that took us 3 hours, a good exercice indeed and we loved doing it. The scenery is spectacular.
We will cherish our memories of this are and would most certainly chose the Albergo al Carugia again without hesitation!

Room Tip: The hotel is located up Via Roma, the main street of the village. From the train station, you walk t...

My niece and I stayed at this hotel in Monterosso and we will have fond memories. Andrea was a great host and was very helpful in providing us information on where to eat and what to do in the area. He was very warm and helpful and made you feel at home. When I left my camera charger at the hotel he had it sent to my home. I highly recommend this hotel as a great place to stay in The Cinque Terre as you have the beach nearby and the train station has good connections. Lastly I can't say enough how helpful and nice Andrea was as a host. He made you feel very welcome to his hotel.

We came to Cinque Terre for a couple of nights with friends. Stayed here and Loved it! Very clean, very comfortable but most of all we loved Andrea! One of the nicest and most helpful hosts we've come across. Living in Europe, we've travel a lot and stayed in many places. We don't need places that are fancy, we come to experience the village or city and culture. The price was great for us, right at the top of town, not to crowded. Yes, a little noisy at times...but life makes noise and we love that! We will come back for sure. Thanks Andrea!

Well although I wouldnt say these accomodations are 5star, we felt more at home here than any other place on our 2 week European tour as a young couple. We feel that Monterosso was the place to stay, as it had its own public beaches, where as the other towns only had rocks in the bay (from what we saw). That being said, the lower hiking trail was closed due to rock slides so we were not able to experience any of those private beach spots!
Back to Albergo....the room was small but accomodating. We stayed in a dbl with private bath. The bathroom resembled a boat bathroom, very small. The room overlooked the street. Location was actaully great, right in downtown, about a 10min walk to train station. We felt it was better than being on strip near train station! Room was cleaned daily with fresh linens. Free wi-fi, but had to go in hallway or on patio for it to connect. You must remember you are in a desolate town and things aren't quit as technologically savy as other places. The patio was very pleasant and we felt comfortable sitting there to use internet. One night we even had some cheese and wine there in the evening. You can hear quit a bit in the rooms, but its quiet at night!
I recommend this place for singles or couples for a few nights stay, not really a place for a whole family for a week long vacation. The HOSPITALITY WAS PRICELESS! Andrea (male version of name) was our absolute favorite in keeper we meant, always happy, there with any answers needed, and as someone else mentioned "there was never a task too big".
We would definitely stay here again!

We really enjoyed our stay. Andrea was an amazing host!! He was certainly one of the kindest people we met on our trip. He gave us a lot of advice and was eager to please. He even made us a reservation for a place in Positano we were having a hard time reaching. The hotel is in a great location in the old town. The room is simple and clean. We had no complaints at all and would recommend this place to anyone.

What we loved most about staying at Al Carugio is the relaxed happy vibe that exudes in the place. As mentioned many times in previous reviews Andrea the owner is a gem. He cares about all his patrons and tries to give them the best advice to make there stay in Monterosso special. I think his positivity is infectous. The area in front of reception is a great place to hang out. People talk to each other and chat about their day etc. The accommodation ticks all the boxes - good shower, comfortabe bed and the room cleaned daily. The rooms are small but are well laid out. This hotel is great value for money. I wouldn't think twice about staying here again.

As the other reviewers state the actual accomadation is pretty basic, however it is spotless and well maintained. The location is perfect as a base for exploring the town and Andrea provides fantastic restaurant suggestions and is a very welcoming host.
