Had lunch at thursday noon. Waiter was rude, misheard us and thought we only wanted drinks. We were planning primi and secondi platti but because he did not pay attention we just had spaghetti. Which was very nice but a bit overpriced. It seemed like they were busy enough and therefore did not pay attention to customers.

Waiter was nice and friendly. The pesto gnocchi was awesome. Outdoor seating is packed and crowded but definitely lively and fun.

We wandered around the old part of Monterosso looking for our dinner location (we have found walking around and making a reservation a few hours or a day before dining works best for us and our kids since it's too hard to plan too far in advance). The menu looked great and we asked if they could fit us in that night. Originally they said no, but then after leaving them our name (my Italian maiden name), they said we could get the time we wanted for that night. TOTALLY worth it (we considered eating there a second time during our stay -- it was that good). They bring many of the dishes in these huge cast iron pots, right to the table, with risotto (which was spectacular), mussels or pasta. The gnocchi were sublime. The guys at the table next to us had these tiny ravioli which looked so good the waitress got them to share a small plate with us from their pot. Grilled octopus like I've never had. A perfect start to our stay in the Cinque Terre.

Ciak has a great location with outdoor tables right on the Via Roma. Unfortunately, the night we were there the location was about the only thing it had going for it.

When we arrived there were a total of four diners at the 30 or so outside tables but since we didn’t have a reservation – which drew a dirty look and clearly made us second class citizens – we were led around in circles until we were finally seated at the table we had asked for when we walked in the door. The restaurant never did fill up.

Our dishes were mediocre at best. The anchovy sampler reminded us of the anchovies we dislike in the US rather that the delightful ones we’d enjoyed elsewhere in the Cinque Terre – they we bitter, salty and the stuffed ones were stuffed with what reminded us of store bought turkey stuffing – all mushy bread crumbs and unidentifiable bits. Not a very pleasant start. The mains were not much better. My wife’s fish was overcooked and my dish, the Cinque Terre signature pasta with pesto, was bland and unexciting and, if there were pine nuts there, I couldn’t find them.

Service was equally lackluster. Our waiter had more tables than he could handle had spent much of the evening delivering the wrong order.

There are much better options in Monterosso and throughout the Cinque Terre.

This place is a must visit. We loved it so much we returned again the next night. We could not figure why it was not rated higher than it is.
The prices are very reasonable and they were very honest. We chose quite an expensive wine and the waiter recommended a cheaper one to our surprise. It was great.
Try the seafood spaghetti. It is served in an enormous terra cotta pot and is to die for. Quite inexpensive for what you get.
