We just knew that we would love Il Patio in Manarola from the photos on trip advisor and we were not disappointed. Piera was so helpful when emailing and although sadly she was away during our visit her brother in law Angelo met us. He not only carried my very heavy bag to Il Patio but when we left he carried it back down again, now that is what I call service above and beyond!!

We stayed for 6 wonderful nights in the apartment with the view over the houses to the sea and it was perfect for our needs. You will find Il Patio spotless. There is a very comfortable bed, table, chairs, fridge, stove and some pots and pans should you wish to cook. There is no kettle/jug but we used a small pot for boiling water. The bathroom is excellent with a very good shower. Should you wish to do any washing there is a line just below the windows which was very useful for us travellers.

Manarola is the "quiet" village and we loved this. In the evening and before 10 in the morning the village belonged to the locals and we felt like one of them. We bought fresh bread or rolls, yoghurt, fruit, cheese and ham from one of the shops for our breakfasts and/or lunch. One evening we bought a take away. We ate twice at Billy's where you should book as people line up hoping for a cancellation. The food there was amazing.

We love walking and exploring and the countryside around is beautiful. There are some great walks and certainly if you are not fit when you arrive you will be when you leave as there are a great many steps. However, the locals cope so why not us?

A train service connects the five villages and also the ferry. The shortest walk is from Manarola to Riomaggiore along the "lovers way". As this area is a national park, a fee of 5 Euros per person is charged. However for 10 Euros it is possible to travel on the trains all day and also do the walks. Years ago it was possible to walk to all the villages but sadly land slips have put an end to this. The most challenging walk is from Monterosso to Vernazzo with may be 500 steps to start off with but take your time, look at the view and by the time you get to Vernazzo you will be ready for lunch and a drink. One of the prettiest walks we thought was to catch the bus in Manarola up to Volastra and then walk through the vineyards looking down upon the sparkling sea. This walk does go down to Carniglia the only village not on the coast.

For those who are not into walking there are two other "days out" we enjoyed. One was to catch the ferry down to Porto Venere and then right back up to Monterosso. By doing this you can see the five villages from the sea. The other was to catch the train to Santa Margherita which is a large and elegant town right on the water and from there it is possible to catch a ferry to Portofino. This is an attractive harbour village and good for a quick visit but it is definitely for the rich and famous with boats and prices to match.

We really enjoyed our time in Cinque Terre and would not hesitate to recommend Il Patio. We did not see the other apartments but could thoroughly recommend ours.

Room Tip: We liked the apartment with the view over to the sea.

It was a really nice stay in Manarola. I recommend Il Patio to everyone, if you want to explore the cinque terre.

We stayed for 4 nights, the first one in one of the rooms and the rest in one of the apartments. I really can't add anything new to what has already been written in the rest of the reviews, everything was perfect. The location is very good, close to the railway station exit, all was thoroughly clean and in order, and the owners are especially kind and helpful.

Room Tip: One of the apartments looks to the sea, which I guess is wonderful. Nevertheless, the other one has a table and two chairs just outside the back entrance, by the patio and looking to the hill and vineyards. Perfect place for a relaxing or romantic dinner.

As our first "apartment" on our European travels, we weren't sure what to expect. However, the first impressions of Piera's courtesy, charm and hospitality we'd gleaned from her emails during the booking process were "spot on". We were greeted on arrival in the main street (no need to look for Piera, she had us in her sights straight away), and she'd soon guided us to a beautiful apartment with views out over the town and the Meditteranean. Piera filled us in with a helpful amount of local hints and knowledge and even brought us lemons from her own tree. The apartment was spacious, modern, and spotlessly clean...a credit to Piera and Lucio. It was the perfect base from which to venture out into and over the Cinque Terra. After some serious days walking/climbing the bed was a delight. It was VERY comfortable with a perfectly weighted doona/duvet. Just what was required for weary walkers. On our departure, Lucio and his brother in law assisted (read that as "carried") our very heavy suitcases down the steps to the main street for us...sorry people, but this was blue ribbon service!!

We cannot speak highly enough of our experience, and all in all, HIGHLY recommended. Piera and her husband/team were an absolute pleasure to deal with. One day, we will be back!!

My wife and I spent 3 days in Manarola and the II Patio apartment was the highlight of our stay. This apartment is VERY clean and comfortable. Piera and Lucio provided us with excellent service and helped us plan activities for our stay. Very reasonably priced, excellent service, comfortable apartment. What more could you ask for? 5 STARS!!!!
