“Great find in quaint Manarola”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 17, 2009

We loved Carugiu! It was just what we wanted: reasonably priced, very clean apartment in Cinque Terre. We stayed in the larger suite with the small kitchen and balcony. The kitchen has a small refrigerator and table with 2 chairs. The buildinng is located up the winding main street in Manarola. Be prepared for lots of steps. Manarola is a charming little town away from the crowds of Monterosso and Vernazza.

We recommend a walk at sunset on the Via dell'Amore.

One note: the ATMs were empty in all five towns for the first day that we were there. And the train station at Manarola did not take credit cards. So, I would advise taking cash with you just in case.

This was such a great find! We had so much uncertainty about how to get to Manarola, park, find our accommodations, etc. But the experience was easy following directions from the hosts' daughter in law, who speaks English. The hosts speak Italian, but somehow were able to explain things to us, even how to operate the espresso machine in the hallway. The accommodation is listed as "eco-friendly," and it is only a short walk from the parking area outside town or from the train station. Manarola is very small, so everything is easy to find. Did not really miss a "sea view," since we got plenty of views during our hikes. The view from the balcony of the hillside vineyards is quite impressive. Would recommend this spacious, clean B&B and would stay here again!

  • Liked — Location, spaciousness, cleanliness

We just got back from Italy a few weeks ago and we stayed in the Carugiu B&B for 3 nights. The B&B has upgraded in 2005. We stayed in a suite which includes a eating area, seperate bath and a balcony besides the bed room. The room is extremely clean and Chrstine, the owner, is very helpful even she doesn't speak English. The location is prefect as you don't need to do too much climbings after a day of hiking and walking between villages. Although, the breakfast doesn't include in our stay, self-served coffee is free in the morning. I definitely will stay at the Carugiu B&B again if I revisit this area.

This place was exactly what we needed. We stayed for 3 nights at the end of September and it cost 70 euros/night. It was clean, spacious and well situated. We loved the fact it had a fridge and the tv, coffee/tea maker, and the small balcony were great bonuses. Although the owners do not speak English, their step-daughter, Christine, did and was lovely. She said if we needed anything to just ask. I could see how some people may find the hill up there difficult, but it honestly was not terrible although we were happy to get there when we had our bags. There is an uphill road and then you take about 20 stairs and then the small staircase inside. My husband and I are in our late twenties/early thirties and we didn't have much difficulty at all.

We did the 6d hike on Christine's recommendation and LOVED it! It was certainly precarious in a few spots but the views were fabulous and well worth it (as was the gelato when we reached Corniglia).

We would most certainly go back and stay here if in the area again.

I went there with my girlfriend. The accomodation is great even without sea view. Very quiet, very clean.
The B&B hosts are great, very welcoming and full of good tips for places to see, beaches and restaurants.

Would definitely go back there.

My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our stay here...it was such a nice break from the hostels we had been staying in when we were in Rome and Florence. It was easy to find and when we got there we were greeted and given a map and suggestions for dining and going out. Christine (who helps run the place along with her in-laws) even helped me find a suitable adapter since the one I brought wouldn't work properly. A life saver since my camera battery was low...and Cinque Terre is so stunning that you'll end up taking hundreds of photos.

We stayed in the suite upstairs and were very happy with it. It was affordable, clean and cozy and came with a few up up to date features, including a little flat screen tv attached to the wall. The shower was spacious and most of the bathroom features seemed new. We had a little kitchen area, too, with a mini fridge (perfect for storing those water bottles you will need on your hike between the villages) and table and chairs. Our room looked out into a little street and some vineyars/hills and there were even clothes lines outside for us to hang our wet bathing suits on.

We loved staying in Manarola, overall. It was so relaxing! The food was excellent and the swimming areas were nice and it didn't feel as touristy or packed as the other areas (Vernazza was swarming with American tourists). I would recommend this B&B and Manarola to all of my friends.

And go to the little Gelateria by the harbor in Manarola...Christine had recommended it and I can honestly say it had the best gelato I've ever had (my favorite was a cone with a scoop of lemon and a scoop of berry)...so refreshing after a long walk!

We loved staying at the Carugiu B&B during our stay in Manarola. Manarola is a great town to stay in, it is big enough to have a selection of restaurants and businesses, but not so packed with tourists (Vernazza, Monterosso) that the experience feels less authentic. We had the room located on the ground floor right next to the entrance, and it was great. There was a small table and chairs, a wall mounted TV (small), and even a small fridge, which was great to keep drinks cold and breakfast items ready to eat. And the price cannot be beat. It is located up the street (a fairly steep walk) from the main part of town, with plenty of local people hanging around. It really felt like we were part of the community being in that location. While there is no view, the room and bathroom is clean and perfect for an authentic experience in this great Cinque Terre town. Swimming at the town rocks and eating at the restaurants were great. You'll love Manarola.
