Ca' de Baran

This was our favorite among our 3 hotels and 2 apartments during our recent 3 weeks in Italy. The Marina apartment has a balcony with a view of the sea. We appreciated having a clothes washer and only 15 steps up from the street. Access from the train station was as good as it gets in Cinque Terre, and there were excellent places to eat nearby. The manager couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating. There was a little noise from the neighbors at the back during the night but surprisingly little from the street. The mattress was firm, the linens bright and fresh, the rooms spacious and immaculate. The Marina apartment is a comfortable, convenient place to stay and a great value!

I wish I could rate Ca' de Baran 3.5, as 3 seems to low, but it's just not quite a 4. I'l get the negatives out of the way first:

Despite being on the top floor and near the sea, the room had no view as the only window was across into someone's kitchen (A bit awkward; we never saw anyone in there but who knows if they saw us).

Because all the lights in the stairwell are controlled by the same switch, and because the door to the room has a glass panel with only a sheer curtain covering it, anytime that anyone in this 5-storey building entered or left during the night or in the morning, light would come pouring into the room. Not a huge problem, but something to consider if you're a light sleeper.

The heat and hot water stopped working one night, but started back again the next morning.

There's no internet access, but we weren't necessarily expecting to have it anyway.

All that said, this place is in a very good location, near the Manarola train station with a great restaurant practically down the stairs. Also, even though we arrived at night, after Lorenza was gone, she aranged for Paolo to meet us and let us in.

We spent two nights in the 4th Floor "Terrazza" apartment. The apartment, while simple, was very clean and nicely appointed. The rooftop terrace was wonderful for eating and relaxing. Manarola is a lovely town along the Cinque Terre and the apartment is well located. The best part of our stay was Lorenza, the property owner. She could not have been more helpful when we had car trouble. She allowed us to stay longer in the apartment while they contacted the car rental agency and tow truck company  and did everything they could to ease our circumstances. We greatly appreciate her kindness and  highly recommend the family run Ca' de Baran.

2 recently rennovated rooms above a pottery shop. We (2 couples) had a wonderful 3 night stay at Ca De Baran. Excellent location in the heart of tiny Manarola. Easy access to train, seaside, boats, trail (Via de Amore) without alot of steps. Manarola (and Ca de Baran in particular) is a good choice amongst the 5 towns to stay if you want to avoid alot of steep stairs. We spent our days touring the Cinque Terre towns, and spent our evenings on the rooms terrace watching the people and having cocktails. Several good restaurants and shops nearby. Room was clean, good air conditioning, good shower, good bed. At check-in, you are asked to pay in cash, you are given the keys, and then you are on your own - no daily cleaning, no one will bother you, the pottery shop owner does not speak english. There is a rumble from the train as it speeds by once per hour. And the children playing in the square next door can be loud if you sre trying to take an afternoon siesta. Overall - a great find !!

Room Tip: There are only 2 double rooms, with a shared balcony.

We stayed in Ca'de Baran recently and couldn't complain about a thing!
The directions to get there were simple, and the room was very basic but comfortable, adequate and extremely clean. The location is very central, right in the main street, not far from the harbour, so no walking up millions of stairs!!! Manarola is a great place to stay in the Cinque Terre as it is a small village that can't have too many tourists ; ) it is central and the main walk between the towns (via del amore) is at its doorstep! You can jump on a train or catch a ferry from there to the other towns. The restaurants are lovely and reasonable prices and there are some nice little places to swim but no beach. You get a good look at local village life with the boats going in and out and locals about, not like some of the other more touristy towns.
The family run business has a pottery shop below the rooms, and they are all friendly. The rooms are great value for money, clean, good air con, but dont have a kitchenette, they are quite small, but we were hardly in them.
The only downer is the occasional train noise, it didn't bother us too much as after all the walking we slept like babies! Warning: the walk from Montorosso to Vernazza is a steep 2 hr walk as is the walk from Vernazza to Corniglia. Check first before you take off as some tracks are closed, when we were there the Corniglia to Manarola track was closed.

Three very nice rooms above a pottery store, run by the store owner. These rooms are newly refinished, so everything is spotless and new. The furnishings are basic but quite adequate, you don’t need to spend much time in them. Powerful air conditioning when you need to get out of the sun. There is a brief rumble from trains passing in the nearby tunnel each hour from 5am – didn’t bother us. Best thing about them is the location – they are on the main street, very close to the harbour, just a short walk after the tunnel. There are many other properties that are a considerable walk uphill

Owners do not all speak English. Store closes at 8 or 9pm and opens at 10am. They need cash, no credit at the end of your stay.

Room Tip: book early and check reviews, many places are low quality
