“Incredible view, great balcony, odd living space.”
Reviewed May 17, 2011 for a stay in May 2011

We arrived in Manarola late in the day and missed the bus up to the top of the hills to our rental property. The staff member who walked with us up to our property advised us that we would have to wait 30 minutes for the next bus, so we chose to walk dragging 50 lb. luggage on wheels, carrying purses and backpacks. I'd advise waiting for the bus which I rarely saw when we were there 4 days! The hills are very steep and it is a long way...it seemed longer after a day of traveling! We are physically fit , ages 30-60, but it was challenging for most of us! At the top of the hill you have to take your luggage up "simple steps" which I did not count, but there are many. A stone ramp on the side helps, but it is steep and you are tired by this time. Simple compared to hiking in Cinque Terre which is a must while you are there!

When you reach the apartments, the hallway stairs are steep and very narrow. We had two flights to go up. Most women or elderly would have a difficult time with luggage. If you are packing light, no problem! Once we got in, we felt the hike up was worth it though! We were thrilled with the view. It was amazing! We could see the village which surrounded the sea as well as the hillside which was directly across from our balcony. Displayed there was Mario Andreoli's stations of the cross holiday display that was more beautiful at night all lit up. The view was the best thing about the property. And it was neat and clean.

Now for what I feel needs improvement. The kitchen area is very small and difficult to use for any type of cooking. There are plenty of dishes and utensils, but just the necessities. There is no big coffee pot. There is a toaster and a one cup stove top Espresso maker which works, but for five people, it's not ideal. You can buy a good coffee or cappuccino at the bottom of the hill at a little coffee shop/bakery. There is a very small refrigerator in the bedroom area. We purchased cheese, olives bread and meats and wine for appetizers, but cooking seemed too difficult in such small space to work and not much space for storage. We weren't there to cook though.

The first day when we went to put away our groceries, we were welcomed by ants because the previous renters left a bag of brown sugar opened in a drawer. They found their way to all the kitchen drawers and the only two drawers we had in the wardrobe. I quickly moved my clothes back to suitcases. Management said they would take care of it. Housekeeping dropped off a nearly empty can of ant spray that is just a temporary fix. I spent more time than I should have cleaning out drawers and killing all the ants. We didn't want the smell of the spray, so opted to only use it at the doorway outside. Once I cleaned out all the drawers, the ants seemed to stay outside where we kept empty bottles and the garbage! Hopefully the owner added ant traps for future guests!

The bathrooms were nice and new as is everything else. There is no hand soap or shower products which might be typical. It varied during our 3 week trip in four different rentals. Beds and linens were nice here. The sofa bed is a futon which I slept on one night. It was hard, but OK and linens were comfortable.

My biggest complaint about this place is that it is the bare minimum. It felt cold and empty in the main room. There are no rugs and they are greatly needed in the bathrooms and kitchen where the floors get dirty from wet feet and dripping near the sink. There's no gathering place other than the balcony which is fine with good weather. There is plenty of space in the main room for more furniture and amenities, but what you see in the pictures is what you get. It is OK, but could be so much more comfortable with very little expense.

We did not go to Cinque Terre to spend much time in our rooms, but if the weather wasn't good and at the end of a long day, it is nice to have a comfortable place to gather and sit awhile. There is a very small flat screen TV mounted on the wall, but there was no signal. The owner said the entire village was having problems. We were there 4 days and never got a satellite signal.

We had 3 rooms, one double that adjoined to the balcony and one double downstairs. The downstairs room was the nicest as far as size and storage goes. Adjoining room was very small with no space for luggage. Upstairs, my daughter kept her things in the main room which was OK since we are family. The main room had one wardrobe, a futon and two night stands and the refrigerator. There were two Ikea-like folding plywood laminate tables that are not made for outdoor use . I believe there were 6 folding wood chairs. The table is pictured on the site. We were asked to bring them in every night from the patio which was not at all convenient. It would be nice to have proper outdoor furnishings.

The staff that we talked to were all very nice and professional and very helpful. Especially the last day when we needed internet access. A very sweet young lady helped me find rental car information and printed out information for me. It is impossible to find Wi-Fi there, although we noticed the last day one restaurant had FREE Wi-Fi which none of the locals seem to know about. No internet cafes located in Manarola, but our Verizon signal was good!

The second day we were there, I stopped by the office to talk to the ladies who worked there about the ant problem which was not resolved. The owner was in the office and spoke to me briefly and said that he had ants in his house, too! He sort of blew off the lack of TV reception and ants as if it was out of his control. He said he would get ant traps, but there were none when we left two days later.

I probably would not go back to this property, but I would still recommend it if you can manage to get your luggage up all the simple steps! It is new and very clean and the staff is nice! The view is to die for!

Management Response
May 16, 2011
First I want to thanks the guest for the sincere review but there are some things not correct :
1) there are 2 coffee maker for up to 8 people in the house (probably they did not find the second one)
2) ants : first we put the spray, then I personally put a sort of poisoning sugar in the kitchen area and by the window. It was clearly visible.
3) the satellite has been fixed properly the day they left but it did not depend on us.
4) there are two refrigerators (one per floor)
5) the house has independent heating in each room and we provide extra blankets if required. If somebody fell cold just ask some more blankets.
6) steps are everywhere in Cinque Terre and the old houses even when restored has narrow stairway. The more you go up the best view you get.If you look for a flat sandy beach this is not the right place for your vacation.
