...This is what my wife exclaimed while eating at this unexpected gem of a restaurant.
Paulo at Best Western (just a couple blocks away) recommended we go here and it was one of the top 3 meals of our three week European trip, which included such gastronomic destinations as Venice, Brussels and Lyon! And yes, their Refosco house wine was perfect- and grown right in their family vineyards. I had the soft polenta with pruscuitto among other items and it was fantastic! We met three generations of their family and our waiter and all the other staff seemed harmonious enough to be extended family as well. Though it was not necessary, we all had fun using my "Say Hi" iPhone app which translated any needed details of how the food was prepared or just interesting chit-chat. The food was very delicious and very authentic and worth a detour if you're anywhere near Udine.

We were recommended this place from the best western we were staying at and was not disappointed. Out of the two weeks we visited Italy afterwards, nothing came close. The atmosphere was of a small tavern family run for generations. It was filled with families and groups that looked like they made this place theirs.
The most polite Italian's in Italy. The waiter could barely speak English but spent time explaining what we might like. At the same time we ended up ordering every course on the menu as we thought this is how you must eat dinner in Italy.
The food was excellent, service was excellent, great atmosphere. Something our family will remember for a lifetime (especially as we were mainly disappointed with meals in the rest of Italy).

When you, as a reviewer, clicks a 5-star score on "overall rating", TA responds with the question "Is this one of the best meals you've ever had in a restaurant?" Rarely, if ever, I would answer with "yes". But for Alla Vedova, if the question would have been "Is this one of the best grilled chickens you've tasted?" my wife and I would decisively have replied with "yes". The benchmark recipe here is the "pollo al Diavolo", and it is big (you may order half a portion, should you wish). But we do not - the owners, i.e., Sandra, Ida and Cristina Zamarian are all too happy to help us to bring home the delicious reminders, which form the basis of a chicken soup on which you may live the remainder of the week.

We visited here as we were recommended by the hotel we were staying in. The owner spoke broken English so you could order what you want without any risks. The chicken cooked on the grill was brilliant and the semifredo desert melted in your mouth. Also a bottle of local wine was only €4.

This is an authentic Italian place, very cosy , nice atmosphere . The food is regional which is very good to try and it is a restaurant with long tradition . The service is great they will help you with the menu if you do not speak Italian. All kind of gnocchi they have are a recommendation to try . Meats as well. If you are going to Udine this A MUST !
