Bed and Breakfast Jenny's Garden
Ranked #19 of 42 Udine B&B and Inns
Reviewed September 2, 2012

We were traveling through Europe this August, and we only were able to stay in Udine for 1 night and 2 days on our way from Vienna to Venice. Mary Ann was such an amazing hostess that she made us regret the fact we didn't have more time to spend there.

The moment we arrived, she was exceedingly kind and helpful. She let us drop off our baggage early so we could explore the countryside. She offered us several maps, water, and gave countless suggestions on what we could and should do (all of them good). She even lent us 2 bicycles to help us go around Udine. Thanks to her, we had a wonderful time not just in Udine, but also in Cividale and Aquileia. We are definitely coming back to Udine and Jenny's Garden so we can see more of the countryside and take Mary Ann's advice as fully as we wished we could this time. Thanks to Mary Ann, Udine was the highlight of our trip in Europe, and her Bed & Breakfast was by far the best place we stayed.

As far as the bed & breakfast goes, it is a little ways out of the city center, but it is on a busline, and it is within walking and biking distance. The room was beautiful and well kept, and the breakfast was delicious.

My girlfriend and I stayed here for 2 nights at the end of July.

The BnB is set back off a main road (far enough to not hear any noise from traffic). It's about 10-15 minute walk to the centre of Udine, or there is a bus right outside the property. The owners are an Italian guy and an american woman. They were very welcoming and friendly.

The room, ensuite, kitchen etc were all very clean and tidy. Breakfast was laid out for us, and was all really good.

We would definitely stay again.

Any questions we had were answered, and the surrounding areas of Udine are fantastic. I would highly reccommend Jenny's Garden to all! Hoping to make it back soon. Thank you again.

I booked this hotel after getting a list of possible B and B's from tourist info. Udine. I chose it mainly because I needed somewhere that spoke English and it turned out to be perfect. The hostess is American/Italian and has llived in Italy for 30 years. She is so helpful and I loved having the use of the kitchen outside breakfast time, to make myself a hot drink. It felt very much a home away from home which was perfect when travelling on my own. The bus stop (bus No 4, which comes about every 20 mins) is right outside the door and takes you directly to the railway station and downtown. Also they have Wi Fi which is a bonus. I would thoroughly recommend this accommodation for value and a home away from home, especially for English speaking tourists. Also the fan was great to help sleep on hot summer evenings.

Room Tip: I had the room overlooking the garden which was quieter than the street side.

My husband and I stayed at the B&B Jenny’s Garden in July 2007, and then again in June 2011 – this second time we were with a couple of friends and their young child. An Italian friend recommended this B&B to us, as it is his preferred spot for his Friuli business trips and personal weekends in the area. We were all very pleased with the experience and will stay here again next time we visit Udine.

In summary, this B&B is in a typical Friuli house which has been renovated and it was extremely clean, spacious, with a warm and welcoming feeling, in a great location, easy to find, and it includes a very good breakfast, free use of bicycles, free parking, free Wi-Fi, and if the weather cooperates, you can take advantage of their beautiful garden for breakfast! The owners are friendly and will provide you with a lot of information on sightseeing in the region, restaurants in the city, transportation options. The lady is American and speaks fluent English and Spanish – this was a huge plus especially for our friends that speak no Italian!! Her husband speaks only Italian, but does his best to communicate through key words and gestures, so that was not a problem.

The B&B Jenny’s Garden was like staying at a friend’s house and we felt at home. It proved to be a great value and we will visit it again in the future. Here is all the detail I can remember:

- Room and Bed:
The rooms were spacious and very clean. All linens were clean and looked new. We stayed in the front room with queen size bed. As you might know, it’s custom in European B&Bs to put together two twin beds to create a queen… not here!! This was a real queen bed and it was very comfortable.
The other room, which is a double room with a window toward the garden, has two twin beds that were put together… and unlike in some other B&Bs in Europe, our friends said this was well done and they were very comfortable. By the way, they asked in advance to put the beds together, if not they would be in the normal way.
For the child, they added an additional bed in the parents’ room. They said that if it were a baby, they can provide with all the necessary linens for babies too.
As you might know, most European homes do not have Air Conditioning, but the in-room fans provided a good breeze.

- Bathroom:
Each room in this B&B has a private bathroom. The bathroom is small but new and efficient. Colorful tiles, and everything you need from soaps, extra toiletries, and hair drier at request. The stand-up shower has a good water jet (which I always think is important)

- Breakfast:
We were surprised to find so many options for breakfast, from bread and jellies, nutella, yogurt, fresh fruits, and multiple options of cereals and granola. You can pick between hot fresh Italian espresso, or decaf, “orzo” coffee, and even American coffee if you ask. And of course, milk, fruit juices, and a nice choice of teas! Breakfast was served in the common kitchen at the communal table and during the 2007 trip, when the weather was warm and sunny, the owners offered to serve breakfast in the garden – it was so nice and relaxing! The kitchen is clean and spacious. At our arrival, they asked if we had any special dietary needs (gluten free, sugar free, or anything special for the kid).

- Living-room area:
The foyer of the B&B expands in a communal area with couches, where you can relax with a glass of wine before bed, or in the morning planning your day. The DVD player was great to keep our friend’s child busy with a movie.

- Parking:
Free uncovered parking right outside.

- Garden and front yard:
My girlfriend and I caught up sitting in the garden after breakfast, while my husband took a nap on the hammock and our friend’s child played in the grass!

- Amenities we enjoyed:
English speaking! Free Wi-Fi, regional tourist maps and brochures, outside sitting area (in the back garden as well as in the front of the B&B under a large umbrella. Bus stop to downtown every 10 minutes right in front. Free use of bicycles and lock to go downtown (mostly only pedestrian areas). We also were allowed to use the kitchen’s fridge to keep our personal sandwich meats cold for the next day pic-nic in the mountains.

A few tips:

1. As most B&Bs in Italy and Europe, payment is accepted only in cash, so plan your ATM trip in advance.
2. Let the owners know at what time you need breakfast and they will prepare it based on your schedule.
3. If you are celebrating a special occasion, let them know (I heard from our friend that they will do something special like flowers or a bottle of bubbly!)
4. They are flexible with check-in and check-out hours, but it’s important that you tell them when you will arrive and stay on plan, so they can wait for you at the right time. They are a family and sometimes need to leave the premise.
5. If you need advice on places to visit or restaurants, ask the lady: she gave us a lot of ideas.
6. When in Udine, go have an aperitivo in Piazza San Giacomo with the locals
7. If you are interested in the history of the barbarians invading Italy, go visit Cividale Del Friuli (20 minutes away by car). And when in Cividale, have a slice of Gubana or a few Strucchi (local regional cake/desserts – yum!!)
