It's worth a visit in a clear day, the square and the surrounding area; Austro Hungarian buildings and several small bistrot that can be found only in Trieste. One thing missing, from the original design of the square, there are a total lack of trees in the square ( in any black and white picture or paintings there was several and huge trees in the square).

The square is the largest public square in Europe that's open to the water.. that's what they say. In the other three sides there are outstanding buildings, belonging to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Trieste is not the typical italian city in terms of architecture. In the see side, there is the so-called Molo Audace, a long dock from where you may see the whole square. Around the place is full of cafes and bars, with the old town and cavana just a few steps far. If during the day you may enjoy the square and the view to the Adriatic sea, at night, the square is illuminated with blue lights, whose show it in a very beautiful way.

You annot miss this wonderful square facing the sea, both during the day and also at night. You may enjoy drinking a coffee or eating an ice cream outdoor in summer, or appreciating the atmosphere of its cafe' inside in winter.

if you get any closer to Trieste you must visit the square, three sides with outstanding buildings with distinctive architectural style that makes Trieste different from any other city in Italy.
The fouth side faces the sea, quite unique to have the sea right there in a big city where normally the harbour is fenced off.
Late afternoon light is probably the best, but the highly discussed (blue) lights in the evening are also spectacular.
The best bar in the square, to me, is the one on the left corner of the town hall block, facing it.
But a few blocks away try the Caffè Tommaseo in Piazza Tommaseo, 4/c; it is great for an afternoon tea with strudel or a cake, intimate and welcoming.

The piazza is the largest public square in Europe that's open to the water, and it is absolutely incredible. There are beautiful, historic buildings surrounding the piazza on three sides, and the view out to the water is spectacular. During the day, look out towards the water; at night, walk out on the Molo Audace to look back towards the lights of the piazza. With restaurants and bars just nearby, it's definitely a place to check out.
