Trieste is such a hidden gem, none of my friends have ever visited this city but hopefully my enthusiastic review of its attractions will convince them to go! The main piazza is simply stunning, the buildings have been beautifully renovated and apart from government offices & tourist info point also house delightful cafes. The piazza overlooks the bay of Trieste and looks amazing at any time of the day. Having spent three days in Trieste I saw it at dusk, midday and in the evening and each time was mesmerised by its imposing presence. Have coffee there on Sunday morning when the locals enjoy reading their papers and any day of the week in the evening, when the citizens spill out to have a drink or two (which are cheap for such a touristy spot, glass of Prosecco costed 4euros, very reasonable)
