This unique landscape cannot be missed. It has a charme on its own, and give yourself some time to walk or hike. You will be rewarded with wonderful scenery!

Kras is region north of Trieste / Trst and spreads till the Julian Alps. It is a mixture of limestone and woods, vineyards, fields and stone walls. It is possible to visit small villages with stone houses or Stud farm Lipica, marvel of Carst. Lower lever are hundreds of caves with different stone decorations (Škocjan Caves are on UNESCO list). You need at least five days to see the nature and to taste local food and wine.

Had a great walk in the beautiful Rosandra Valley leading up to the Slovenian border. Part of the largest Nature reserve, a stream runs through it, rocky limestone landscape with high cliffs and a rich flora. The walk was made possible for
us because we found a website - Curiosi di Natura societa co-operativa - an initiative
of some dedicated locals to promote all the different features of the Karst/Carso. Through them we were able to hire at a very reasonable rate a friendly and extremely knowledgeable guide who knew the best route for us/ how to get there and gave us all
the background and local info as well as pointing out and naming all the flowers and trees - as that was our interest.

If visiting Trieste, you have to go there. It is a plateau that overlooks the gulf and the city of Trieste. The view is wonderful and the food, which is derived from the Italian, Slovenian and Austrian cultures is exceptional.

Ask at the amazingly helpful Tourist Information Centre for bus routes and maps. The 2 and the 4 go up to Opicina but get off at the obelisk and you can walk along a divine panoramic path that goes on to Prosecco where you can get the 42 back. Make sure you have your tickets though - good to buy a pass. There are more demanding walks and cycle trails too. You can also get out to Rosandra where there is a fantastic gorge. The walking is harder but amazing and you feel as if you are in the Alps, only 25 minutes from the city centre.
