We took the bus (No.36) out to the castle and by mistake went too far, but the little fishing village where the bus terminates is pretty and a short walk back to The Miramare.

The grounds of the castle are beautiful and it is worthwhile strolling back into Trieste along the Lungo Mare. You can always hop on a bus if you find it too far. About 3km I think.

A very nice and romantic place to visit with amazing view on Gulf of Trieste. The park has some nice sculptures and some botanical species. You can also visit the butterfly garden.

We have walked from along the passeggiata di Barcola (along the sea) to Miramare and it was superb. It's a great way to enjoy great scenery, to watch the elegant Trieste people and to enjoy visiting the castle.
Few quick facts about the place: it's a medium size castle built in the 19th century, overlooking the sea, that used to be summer residence for the Austrian emperors; the entrance ticket is not expensive but no photos can be taken inside; gardens are not in their outmost shape but they are still beautiful and worth visiting. Originally, the castle being built on a cliff had no gardens at all, however, today there are different species of trees not native to the area.

People from Trieste love Miramare. They talk a lot about the castle and Princess Sisi (Elisabeth of Austria - born on 24 December 1837 and assassinated on 10 September 1898, wife of Franz Joseph I, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary); she used to visit Miramare for short periods.

It is definitely worth a visit.

You have a chance to walk through their gardens before you get to the castle. The castle is situated right on the coast overlooking the sea and inside the castle it is quite interesting with a very nice courtyard..well worth a visit

The "Castello di Miramare" is a fascinating castle in Trieste, northern east of Italy. The entrance is located after the "passeggiata di Barcola", in an almost hidden place you might wish to have indications in order to find. A wonderful walk with a view on the natural maritime reserve leads you into the park of the castle, that in the warm summer nights hosts a "festival of lights and colors". I really suggest you do to stop and take pictures of the breathtaking views of the castle just from the outside and of the open sea. Go inside. For a small fee you'll turn back time. The interior is just wonderful, it preserves the original furnitures, part of which has been restored to its ancient splendor. A guided tour can help you discover all the small and big secrets that the Castle hides till the day of today, as well as the romantic and very sad story behind the construction of this amazing building and the reason why it was hardly inhabited by its owners. Stunning. At summer you can also go and spend some time i.e. reading a book in the shadows under a tree in the park. I wish I could go there every afternoon!!
