Trieste is a must for a city trip. Friendly people, excellent staying facilities, lots of shops and even more nice bars with terraces and last but not least very good payable restaurants all over the city.
it is the home town of one of the best coffee roasters in the world "Illy" everywhere you can have excellent coffee on the terraces and bars, really it is worth to visit this town!

We have been there for 3 days and have enjoyed every day, we will return next September because there is so much more to see and do.

Ruudvan, Holland.

I took a quick day trip to Trieste from Venice. No one told me that Trieste is closed down on Mondays. Don't schedule anything for mondays in Trieste. That said, it is a breathtaking, beautiful city. It looks like Austria in its Architecture and the waterfront is picturesque. It would be a great place for a honeymoon. It is a Beautiful and clean city.

Apart from the main square where many large official buildings are, we were not really impressed with the rest of this city and harbour.

Arrived at airport and took Bus51 to main bus/train station in the city. Then walked 400 mtrs to our hotel, Star Hotel Savola Excelsior along the seafront. An excellent hotel with friendly staff. When booking this hotel we were told that seaview rooms would cost extra but when we arrived we found we were in such a room with great views over the bay at no extra cost ! A good start !!
As it was our 1st evening we asked reception for recommendation for a restaurant and they recommended Chimera di Bacco which was a good choice with excellent food and good wine although not cheap. Following day to Tourist Office for audio walk around city to get our bearings which took us about 3 hours. Time for lunch and we stumbled upon Osterio Da Marino in the old quarter with basic quality food and excellent wine list. We returned here most evenings for a glass of Prosecco (€2) and superior complimentary snacks. Evening was wet so we did not venture far but to a local Pizza place around the corner from hotel. We did plan to go to Venice on day2 but weather not good so we revisted and explored the city a bit more and did plan to catch a tram to Opicina but this had stopped for sometime and by the time we returned to harbourside we had missed the 11.20am ferry to Muggia where we had planned a seafood lunch. We took the ferry after lunch to Muggia which at 3pm was very quiet. A stroll around Muggia took1 hr and return ferry. Evening meal in Trieste at Al Bagatto which was more expensive than Chimera di Bacco and we thought not as friendly. Day3 onto Venice by train which took 2 hrs and whole day spent in Venice returning by train at 9.30pm. In spite of what the website time table says we had a direct train to Venice (with the help of the Tourist Office in Trieste) Venice too crowded with tourists !!!!
Day4 spent again wandering around Trieste again and a leisurely lunch in the sunshine before catch Bus 51 to the airport from Bus station
City not touristy which was one of the attractions and most of the staff at restaurants/bars were very helpful. A bit disappointed with Caffe Tommasoe, which was not as grand as anticipated otherwise most things lived up to our expectations. Did not have time to visit Castle Miramare (we planned to go by foot along the sea front) or Opicina but hope to return. City easy to get around and bus service efficient
We enjoyed our stay and hope to return someday

We spent a day in Trieste, wandering in the city - we loved the history, the open air markets, the restaurants. The hike from Sistiana to Duino, along the sea to a castle is beautiful. Level path that is not strenuous, and has beautiful views. Well worth the trip!
