I have been a return customer to Antica Hostaria Da Libero for several years now and I make an effort to visit every time I am in Trieste. This small historic locale is well hidden just below the San Giusto Castle in a residential area. The best way to arrive is by taxi as there is no parking unless you get lucky on a side street. There are just a handful of tables, so reservations are highly recommended. True to Antica Hostaria style, the tables are wood, with paper placemats, and there is a mix of wooden chairs and benches to sit on.
The food has always been excellent, featuring traditional Triestin dishes which take advantage of whatever fruits or vegetables are in season. The menu, which is presented verabally by your waitress, is not extensive, having only 3-4 antipasti, 3-4 pasta/risottos, 3-4 main dishes and 3-4 desserts. No matter what you end up ordering, it sure to be rich with flavor. Depending on how crowded Da Libero is, you may have to wait a little longer than normal for your food. The average price for a three course meal with house wine, per person, is about 35-40 euro.
