“Not the usual fish restaurant”
Reviewed August 26, 2014

Unfortunately you need a car to reach this hidden restaurant, but when you are there the view is a nice change from the most part of the restaurant in Trieste.
The food is excellent, the owner a perfect guest.
Good wine, not exactly cheap.

“Good food and funny waiter”
Reviewed April 15, 2014

Recently I visited Scabar with my local friends in Trieste. It is said that the restaurant owner lady is married to a famous crime writer that I found interesting. This place is famous for seafood. The view from the top is nice but finding the place was difficult, better you take a taxi. The ambiance is simple and the place has only few tables, so please do book in advance. We only saw one waiter (who claimed to be the brother of the owner lady) who couldn't speak a word in English, serving all the tables to all the guests right from water to wine to dessert to main course. So obviously there were delays and confusions. But the food was really nice and we enjoyed the funny antics of the waiter. The crab dish is highly recommended. It is bit expensive, averaging around 40 Euros per head including wine and dessert. The place is clean and has a large parking outside.

“"Keine Frage des Geschmacks" to visit”
Reviewed August 10, 2012

I have had major problems finding the place with my GPS (still not updated) each and every time I have been here. Also, if you are not an experienced driver, you might be in for a nervous breakdown on the extremely steep and narrow road. Peharps taxi is indeed the best alternative if you are in vicinity.

Nevertheless, there is then no problem finding your parking place in front of the restaurant. Location is picturesque, you can watch the blue Gulf of Trieste a couple of miles below you. Settings are unpretentious, yet impeccable. Bathrooms tidy and well kept, but no major competitive advantage in this league. Wine list is hardly exciting, while offering a good choice of mostly regional wines, with all fellow minority compatriot winemakers present, markups very acceptable. Service quiet and impeccable. Well, it may happen that you wait for a refill of your wine glass for more than a minute, but very rarely.

Traditional local cuisine based on very fresh seafood and home-made pasta has been the fundament of this restaurant's success. A tasting menu assembled on the spot with Giorgio's kind help is a must for a gourmet. Insist on their fried calamari inserted at a point in the menu - a dish so ubiquitous and vulgar, but so tenderly different under the caring eye of Ami. My mark would be 15- on a 1 to 20 scale.

There is a second thought, though. A few a years ago the prices were truly customer-friendly, yet recently there has been a regretable upturn. Perhaps due to visiting hoards of readers of the bestselling Veit Heinichen detective series, staging also this cozy ristorante?

“Worth a visit”
Reviewed June 6, 2012

We decided to try out this well-known restaurant, based on various recommendations.
For a start, do not use your own car when going to the restaurant. Take a taxi!
The restaurant itself is located in the hills above Trieste, with nice views towards Slovenia.
The decor is basic, as is the table setting. Service is very friendly and engaged. The menu itself is a good reflection of the local cuisine with wonderful fish and seafood. The homemade pasta was a bit underwhelming.
The wine list offers a good variety of Italian wines from the region, as well as some nice Slovenian choices. Try some of the wonderful Malvasia white wines, they go very well with the local cuisine.
The pricing for both food and beverage is reasonable.
We would definitely consider returning to Scabar, but would first try out some of the other restaurants in this great city.
