Went to Ravenna to check out the town and see the mosaics and stayed here on a recomendation out of a Rick Steves book and was not dissapointed.
You cannot drive into the city without heavy fines and steep parking fees so you have to park just outside the gates into the old town. Casa Masoli is only about 100 yards from Porta Serrata (north gate) and there is a parking area adjacent to the gate which costs only 1.50E per day and is free from 8pm to 8am and from what I could tell, is rarely checked as many of the cars had no tickets on the dash and no city permits. This is a huge plus when selecting a hotel in Ravenna.
The family run staff is great. I ran into Granny Masoli and she showed me her wedding pictures that had to be 50 or 60 years old (she was quite a looker back in her day I can assure you!!!) and she was just so proud to show me the pictures of the rest of her family. It was just a great moment. One of those times that are really meaningful during a trip when you seem to rush from one site, then to a museum and then to the next Duomo. Besides a great bj-rj that my wife gave me while we were hiking the Dolomites, it was one of the most special moments during a 4 week trip abroad.
The rooms are big by european standards with vaulted ceilings, nice furnishings, paintings and the bathrooms are nicely appointed as well. There is a nice private courtyard as well.
The crazy egg shaped mini fridge is a trip. I didn't even figure out what it was til my last day.
Ravenna is a special little town where locals out number tourist by at least10-1 and Casa Masoli is a special BB hotel.
