“Jaw dropping”
Reviewed September 8, 2013

I was not prepared for how incredible the mosaics in this mausoleum are. Incredible. I'd come to Ravenna just for this.

“tiny and well worth it”
Reviewed September 2, 2013

close up views of delicate mosaics. well worth the crowds because you can listen in on other people's tours. you need to buy your combo ticket across the street from the entrance to the basilica.

“Beautiful mosaics”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

We went here on an evening tour of Ravenna with a very chatty tour guide. The mosaics were beautiful, especially at night. It was amusing to hear that Galla Placidia is actually not buried here (it was thought that she was in the middle ages).

“Rare Gem”
Reviewed August 22, 2013

The mausoleum is a small attraction, but it is impeccable. This attraction, as well as several others in Ravenna are from the late Roman Empire. They are all done in mosaics, and are influenced by the Eastern Empire. Ravenna fills in a gap in the history of the world and art. The mausoleum itself is so authentic. The windows are made of a translucent stone, as glass did not exist back then. The mausoleum is beside the most popular Basilica San Vitale, containing perhaps the best mosaics you will ever come across. A stone throw from the Basilica is a parking lot costing 3 Euros. We took a day trip from Venice, which was very rewarding and Ravenna is as overrun by tourists as some of the site in Veneto. Ravenna also has the modest tomb of Dante.

“Depth of color and design”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

When I look at pictures of the mosaics found here, I am more impressed than I was when I was there. Probably this is due to the fact that a great number of people were crowded into a very small space and all of them were ignoring the official who was asking everyone to be silent. There were a lot of geometric style mosaic designs, as well as pictures and thin sheets of stone acted as "windows".
