You only get 5 minutes in here as they need to preserve the microclimate and it is crowded. But it is worth it to see the mosaics, especially the blue 'carpet like' mosaic at the entrance. A tiny jewel.

This is a very small and beautiful building with a very special atmosphere, the mosaics are complete and in superb condition.

The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia is on the grounds of San Vitale, and is entered with the same multi-ticket. Do NOT miss it. It is a miniscule cruciform building with upper walls and ceilings entirely covered with mosaics. Some of these are narrative - Christ the good shepherd, St. Lawrence approaching his own barbecue. Some are spectacular decorative designs - a starry sky, Greek meander patterns, twisting foliage. Gentle deer step through swirling vines, doves drink from a birdbath. A stunning example of early Christian imagery.

So grateful that our private tour of Ravenna included a stop here. Not only a great artistic and cultural experience, but a peek into history that we never new existed....the link between the late Roman empire and the coming age of the Vandals. So cool to learn of it through the story of this amazing woman.
