Owner description: History As a symbol of the Archiepiscopal Chancellery of Ravenna, San Vitale is one of the greatest works of late Roman art. Famous for its mosaics commissioned by Archbishop Maximian (546/556 AD), the basilica is a place of contemplation. While the body descends its steps the spirit rises to the Truth. A masterpiece to be admired for its evident beauty and its hidden, precise, evocative theological argument.

We passed through Ravenna on our group tour, and stopped to see the mosaics at San Vitale Basilica. They are fantastic works of art and were certainly worth our time to stop and see them, after, exploring the town and having a lovely lunch on the piazza.

Fortunately, I kept an audio diary of my visit to Basilica San Vitale, and concluded that there are no words adequate to describe the intense beauty and brilliance of this building! For me, a 5-star rating is not nearly enough!
The basilica was built in the fifth century and is fully grand with its height and octagonal shape and lovely marble floors, all designed with intricate colorful patterns. But then, there is the apse, which is a jaw-dropping testament to the most magnificent mosaic design work I have ever seen. The colors are completely intense, dominated by midnight blue and shining gold, with all other colors interspersed to create biblical stories and portraits. It is impossible to communicate the vastness of the display. It covers the walls, the entrance and domed ceiling of the apse with great variety of subject matter, from separate round pictures of Christ and each disciple, to scenes of interaction and lessons of followers, to a captivating unicorn/horse at the top of the dome.
Absolutely breathtaking!

Really amazing place. Not much English explanation so you will get more out if it by having a guide book or looking at the wiki. We had trouble finding the ticket office which is over the road from the entrance gate. As other reviewers say the mosaics are just stunning.

This basilica is a must see if you are in Ravenna. The mosaic artwork is absolutely divine. It is so different to anything I have seen and is totally awe inspiring. I loved the marble glass - even more striking in the mausoleum.
